Chapter 67: The Little Sister's Anger
"This should be enough food to last a few days."
Jun muttered as he tied two pieces of bear meat with plant vines in the underground storage room.
After weighing them, he nodded and took the meat out of the storage room.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
But before he could close the storage room door, loud thumping sounds suddenly came from far away, shaking the ground under their feet.
"Ula?"
Nanako unconsciously exclaimed in the language of the savage tribe, her body frozen in surprise.
The two carrots she had been holding fell to the ground.
"What is that!?"
Jun was shocked when he saw a huge, furry animal slowly walking towards them.
Without stopping, Jun closed the storage room door quickly, picked up his backpack and bow, then grabbed Nanako's small hand and ran as fast as he could.
It wasn't clear how long they had been running before Jun finally stopped, since he no longer felt the tremors from the ground.
The furry creature didn't seem to be chasing them.
He was breathing heavily as he leaned against the trunk of a large tree.
"That's the Deer God... We need... an offering..."
Nanako spoke softly, breathing heavily.
"Deer God?"
Jun remembered what it looked like. It looked like a really big snow deer.
But its size was unbelievable.
Jun was amazed by the huge body of the creature and its enormous antlers. He was sure that the creature was even larger than the giant bear they had encountered before.
The animals on this island were strange.
"Yes, the chief said that we should offer food as a sacrifice to the God. Only then, will he calm his anger and leave. If not,…"
Nanako suddenly stopped talking and covered her eyes with her hands.
"What happens if not?"
Jun was still deciding whether to go back to the place they left the bear meat.
But he also wasn't sure where the giant creature was now.
What worried him more was what if that creature found their treehouse?
Even though it didn't move in that direction before, it's possible that it could change direction over time.
"If not, the Deer God will freeze humans, then crush them and eat them."
After saying that, Nanako immediately buried her face in Jun's embrace.
It seemed like she had seen something really scary before.
"Frozen...?"
Could creatures like this have special abilities?
Jun knew that Nanako wouldn't lie.
If it were true, then the monster could use some kind of freezing power against its enemies—and that complicated everything.
Even though he had the strength of the bear claw, he wasn't sure he could defeat a creature of that size.
If he could freeze his enemies, he would have almost no chance of winning.
"For now, it's best if we avoid it," he said quietly.
After adjusting his backpack and bow, Jun started walking slowly back the way they had come.
If he felt even the slightest tremor, or if he thought he saw the creature's shadow, he would immediately give up on the bear meat that was left behind.
"Nanako, did the chief say anything else about the Deer God?"
"Was there anything else he said?"
Nanako lifted her head from Jun's embrace.
"No."
She shook her head, her big eyes blinking slowly.
Maybe the chief didn't want to share too much information with a small person like Nanako.
Jun decided that he would ask their "zoologist" expert, Yui Yuigahama, about this later, once they returned to the treehouse.

"It's gone..."
Jun finally returned to the original path and found the bear meat they had left behind.
He tried to follow the creature's tracks in the snow, but then it started snowing heavily again.
The sky slowly turned dark.
"So fast... is it getting dark again?"
Jun had to stop his search.
On the other hand, Nanako's face, who had been following him the entire time, showed worry.
"Jun-nii... Should we go home now?"
Nanako had wanted to tell Jun to go back to the treehouse, but she didn't say anything until the man stopped looking for the creature's tracks.
"Yes, let's go home,"
Jun said, finally noticing the pale face of the little girl.
He stroked Nanako's head.
"I'm sorry I scared you..."
He had been too curious about the creature earlier and had not paid attention to Nanako.
Now he felt a little guilty.
"No, I'm not scared. Wherever Junnii goes, I'll go too.
Nanako shook her head no, even though her heart was already beating fast with fear.
"Being this stubborn... isn't good."
Jun sighed and held the little hand again.
"I don't like little girls who push themselves too much. If you're scared, just say so."
This girl... learned language from Yukino and also got her stubborn nature.
Jun looked over at the treehouse in the distance and hoped it was still safe.
With faster steps, he held Nanako's hand tightly and walked back to their home in the snowy forest.
— — —
"Really? Why did you take so long to come back?"
As soon as they entered, Yukino and the other girls looked annoyed and relieved.
They had talked about whether they should go out to look for Jun, and almost had a fight about it.
"Sorry, we got lost on the way back."
Jun didn't mention the giant furry monster.
He warned Nanako not to spill anything, even though he only glanced at her.
However, Megumi saw it.
Even though she didn't say it, her brother's face looked much darker than usual.
The oil lamp was lit.
The meat soup started cooking on the stove.
Next to it, two black sweet potatoes that had been roasted were sitting out. They were cold.
"Tomorrow... Onii-chan is not allowed to leave the house."
Megumi finally spoke up.
She had not been this angry in a long time.
It was the last straw for her anger towards her brother.
Jun himself… hadn't seen his sister so angry in a long time.
"Oh, look! There are two rabbits!"
The happy voices of Yui and Ginko broke the tension.
They were excited to see two fat snow rabbits that were still alive.
"And there are carrots too!"
When everyone started paying attention to the rabbits and carrots, Jun finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Being surrounded by girls staring intently can make anyone crazy.
Especially his sister, who was gently touching his thigh with her smooth white fingers.
