Chapter 63 - Racing Heartbeats

I ran up the stairs so fast my chest felt like it would burst through my ribcage. My heart was hammering so violently, each beat echoing in my skull, and the thought looped over and over in my mind: no, no, no, no, what the fuck was that? Why would she say that? Why would she look at me like that? My hands trembled as I fumbled with the doorknob, fumbling because my fingers were shaking, adrenaline surging so hard it made my vision blur at the edges. Finally, the door clicked, and I threw myself inside the room, slamming it shut behind me. The sound echoed like a gunshot, bouncing off the walls of the room and into my frantic, overwhelmed brain.

I sank against the door, pressing my back into it, my body still trembling uncontrollably. I wrapped my arms around my chest, trying to suppress the rapid, panicked heartbeat that seemed determined to escape my body.
