Danzō had been pummeled by Kaito's giant rodent for nearly seven minutes straight. Finally, the last Sharingan on his arm closed shut.
The ground around them had already been smashed apart by Susanoo. The shinobi of Konoha had long since leapt onto the rooftops in the distance, watching the scene unfold.
Two of Danzō's subordinates, Aburame Torune and Yamanaka Fū, were being restrained by their respective clan leaders, who refused to let them rush in to help.
One of the Anbu could no longer stomach what he was seeing. He leaned close to Tsunade and whispered,
"Tsunade-sama, is it really alright for us to just stand by like this?"
Tsunade stared at the massive half-bodied Susanoo in the distance, her gaze filled with deep unease.
"This is inside the village. If we provoke Uchiha Kaito any further, there's no way we can protect Konoha."
"But Danzō-sama…"
Tsunade shook her head. She had never harbored much fondness for Danzō. Since this was trouble he had brought upon himself, let him deal with it.
All she could hope now was that once Kaito dealt with Danzō, he wouldn't turn his fury against Konoha.

At this moment, Danzō's mind was in utter turmoil. He touched the bandaged part of his face, hesitating over whether to use Shisui's Mangekyō.
He had already tried Kotoamatsukami on Kaito. Unlike Itachi's preserved eye, the one he possessed only had temporary effect. But regardless of which variant it was, against Kaito it was utterly useless.
The only use left for this eye was Izanagi. But the thought of wasting a Mangekyō Sharingan on Izanagi made Danzō's heart bleed.
Kaito stood within Susanoo, arms crossed. Beside him lay Sasuke.
Moments ago, he had pulled Sasuke into Susanoo to keep him from being crushed into paste during the onslaught.
Looking at the exhausted, cornered Danzō, Kaito sneered,
"Out of revival coins already? Don't you still have one Mangekyō left?"
Danzō stiffened. A flash of alarm ran through him—was there a traitor inside Root? Otherwise, how could Kaito know him so well??
But Kaito didn't immediately strike. There was something else he wanted to confirm.
With a thought, Susanoo dissipated. Kaito reached out, yanking Danzō toward him, and clamped a hand around his throat.
Danzō's eyes bulged as he hurried to activate Izanagi with Shisui's eye. But Kaito was faster—his Mangekyō gleamed with a crimson light, and Danzō's expression went vacant in an instant.
Kaito stared at the stupefied man and asked,
"Now, tell me the truth behind the Uchiha massacre."
"The Uchiha clan plotted rebellion. Together with Hiruzen, I…"
"Why did the Uchiha want to rebel?"
Kaito narrowed his eyes, releasing a magnetic field that carried Danzō's words across all of Konoha.
"They were inherently evil—Konoha's greatest threat! Even if they hadn't rebelled, we would've forced them into it!"
Hearing that, Sasuke shot to his feet, glaring at Danzō with eyes that could kill. He roared,
"On what grounds do you call the Uchiha inherently evil?! What has my clan ever done to betray Konoha?!"
Even under genjutsu control, at the mention of the Uchiha, Danzō's lips curled into a cold sneer.
"Because they wield the Sharingan. Power like that can only be safe in Konoha's hands."
"Bastard! I'll kill you!!!"
Sasuke bit down on his lip hard enough to draw blood, crimson spilling from the corner of his mouth as his face twisted in fury.
Kaito gave him a sidelong glance and said flatly,
"Enough. Don't you want to know why Itachi destroyed the clan?"
Sasuke froze, then fell silent.
Kaito turned back to Danzō.
"Tell me—who ordered Itachi?"
"It was me."
"Did the Third Hokage know?"
"Of course. Not just him—Koharu and Homura knew as well. They all gave their silent approval."
"And Itachi just obeyed you like that?"
"Hmph. Of course he did. Otherwise, his little brother would've died that night too."
Thud!
Sasuke collapsed to his knees. Twin streams of bloody tears slid down his face. At last, he understood Itachi. His brother hadn't done it to "test his capacity." He had done it to protect him.
But Danzō rambled on,
"Though that brat Itachi wasn't all that obedient. He hardly lifted a hand. Most of the Uchiha were slaughtered by that masked man!"
Kaito, of course, knew Danzō was referring to Uchiha Obito. As for Itachi's "half-hearted effort," that was likely due to the ideas Kaito had instilled in him when he was young.
If not for Danzō threatening Sasuke, Itachi might never have gone through with the massacre.
Sasuke was numb, kneeling wordlessly.
Kaito sighed softly, then thrust his hand beneath Danzō's bandages and wrenched out Shisui's Mangekyō.
"Ahhhh!!!"
The searing pain ripped a scream from Danzō, snapping him out of genjutsu.
Clutching his bleeding eye socket, he glared at Kaito with his one remaining eye. When he saw the Mangekyō in Kaito's hand, a look of grim resolve flickered across his face.
Kaito immediately understood. He knew what Danzō intended—Reverse Four Symbols Seal.
Sure enough, Danzō tore open his robes, revealing black sealing marks etched across his torso.
"For the sake of Konoha, I will never let you Uchiha remnants survive!!!"
A surge of black "water" gushed from the seal, spreading across the ground into a swamp of darkness.
Kaito's gaze was calm. He pulled Sasuke to his side and opened the Door-Door Space.
In Danzō's despairing eyes, Kaito stepped inside with Sasuke. Before the dimensional gate closed fully, his voice echoed out,
"For Konoha? Don't kid yourself—you only ever did it for yourself."
With that, the portal sealed shut, and Kaito and Sasuke vanished from Danzō's sight.
Danzō threw his head back in a wail of agony.
"No!!!"
The black mire continued to spread, but with nothing nearby to consume, it devoured only him.
In the anime, Danzō's seal had swallowed half a bridge. Here, it swallowed nothing. If anything, all he managed to seal away was a pocket of air—alongside himself.
When Danzō was gone, the Door-Door Space reopened. Kaito emerged with Sasuke in tow.
Drawing a breath of fresh air, Kaito glanced at Sasuke. The metal restraints on Sasuke's arm clicked loose and fell away.
Kaito said nothing. With a flicker of movement, he disappeared from the scene.
