Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – Ripples in the Mist

The road to Cerulean City wound through the lush terrain of the Kanto countryside. Mist hung low among the trees, weaving through the forest like a living spirit. Early morning dew coated the tall grass, and the chirping of Pidgeys echoed faintly in the distance. Philip and Riolu made their way along the narrow dirt trail, the peacefulness a stark contrast to the intensity of the Pewter Gym battle.

Riolu, ever alert, walked at Philip's side. He sniffed the air, then glanced up toward the dense canopy. His aura sensors twitched with unease.

"You feel that too, huh?" Philip murmured. He paused and looked at the path ahead.

[System Alert: Aura disturbance detected within 300 meters. Source unidentified. Caution advised.]

Philip frowned. "Let's check it out."

They veered off the path into the woods. The air grew cooler, and the mist thickened. Twigs cracked underfoot, and distant rustling added a layer of suspense. Riolu kept close, moving with silent purpose.

Soon, they came upon a narrow creek. Water flowed gently over smooth stones, but something was odd—ripples danced against the current, as if something below the surface stirred it purposefully.

Riolu stiffened, taking a step forward. Philip reached for a Poké Ball on his belt but didn't release anyone. He wanted to observe first.

Suddenly, the water erupted.

A burst of psychic energy surged upward, followed by a high-pitched squawk. A blur of yellow and blue flailed through the air and landed clumsily in the grass nearby.

"W-WHAT was that?" Philip blinked.

From the bushes emerged a pack of Beedrill—four of them—buzzing aggressively, stingers glinting. The yellow creature on the ground looked up in terror, clearly the one they were targeting.

It was a Psyduck.

"Of course it had to be a Psychic-type attracting attention…" Philip sighed.

The Psyduck clutched its head, eyes wide with confusion and pain. Its aura was erratic—wild and unstable—but strong. Philip's system pulsed with new data.

[Wild Pokémon Detected: Psyduck (Male)]

The Beedrill buzzed closer. Philip narrowed his eyes. "Riolu, let's go!"

Riolu dashed forward before he even gave the command, already anticipating the fight.

"Intercept with Quick Attack, then chain into Vacuum Wave!"

Riolu shot through the air in a silver blur, slamming into the first Beedrill and knocking it off-course. Before it hit the ground, he spun and unleashed a wave of compressed energy that struck two others, causing them to scatter.

The fourth dove toward Psyduck, stinger poised.

"Froakie, I need you!" Philip threw the Poké Ball in a quick arc.

Froakie appeared with a croak, scanning the battlefield.

"Water Pulse on the incoming Beedrill!"

A sphere of water launched from Froakie's mouth and collided with the charging Beedrill mid-air, slamming it into a tree. The bug twitched and fell unconscious.

The last two regrouped and came again, furious.

Riolu met them head-on, landing a Force Palm that caused one to drop instantly. The last managed to nick Froakie with a stinger, but the Water-type retaliated with a quick Lick, paralyzing it just long enough for Riolu to finish it off.

Silence fell.

Philip exhaled as the mist slowly dissipated. He glanced at Psyduck, who was still huddled in the grass, trembling and muttering nonsense.

"Hey," he approached slowly, kneeling beside the dazed duck. "You okay?"

Psyduck didn't respond with words, but looked up, tears welling in his eyes. His aura flickered dangerously again.

[System Message: This Psyduck's unstable psychic output may result in self-destruction. Calming aura sync advised.]

[Recommendation: Extend aura to initiate bond.]

Philip hesitated, then placed a hand gently on Psyduck's head. He closed his eyes, projecting his aura gently toward the frightened Pokémon. Riolu stepped beside him and placed a paw on Psyduck as well.

The swirling chaos in Psyduck's energy slowly calmed. The duck blinked up at Philip with wide, curious eyes, then waddled forward and gripped his pant leg tightly.

"You wanna come with us?" Philip asked softly.

Psyduck nodded quickly, his grip tightening.

Philip drew an empty Poké Ball and gently tapped it to Psyduck's head. A flash of red light, a brief shake—then the ball clicked.

[Psyduck Captured Successfully.]

[Aura Bond: 32% Established]

Philip clipped the Poké Ball to his belt and looked at Froakie and Riolu, both of whom nodded approvingly.

Later That Day – Forest Camp

With a small campfire lit, Philip sat beside Riolu and Froakie, while Psyduck sat across from them, staring blankly into the fire.

He had bandages over his bruises, and a warm blanket around his shoulders. He kept blinking at the flames as if they were whispering secrets to him.

"You've got power," Philip said softly, watching him. "More than you know. But it's unstable. We'll fix that—together."

Riolu let out a soft "Rio," as if in agreement.

Psyduck quacked in confusion, then slowly smiled.

Philip leaned back against his sleeping bag, watching the stars rise again.

He smiled to himself.

This world was dangerous—but it was also full of possibility.
