Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Human Who Refused to Kneel

Just as the Shadow Queen lunged forward, her scythe slicing through the air like a streak of death itself, a sudden, bone-deep pain exploded in my chest.

My vision blurred. My knees hit the ground—

And then… the world shifted.

From beneath me, my shadow twisted unnaturally, rising up like a living creature. Its shape flickered, growing darker, deeper—more real than a simple reflection had any right to be.

A voice echoed in my mind.

"You carry the forgotten bloodline… the last Vestige of the Shadowborn."

"What the hell does that mean?!" I gasped, barely able to breathe.

The Shadow Queen's scythe stopped inches from my throat. Her crimson eyes widened in shock.

"Impossible… You're… one of them?"

From the ground, my shadow lashed upward like a whip of pure darkness, wrapping protectively around me. For the first time, I felt it—raw power. Terrifying. Uncontrolled.

I stood slowly, my eyes locked with hers.

"I don't know what's happening…" I growled, my fists clenched. "…but if this power means I don't have to kneel to anyone—then BRING IT ON!"

The storm above us roared to life.

The Queen smiled—wild, dangerous, thrilled.

"Finally… You're interesting."

Chapter 15: The Human Who Refused to Kneel

The storm above the coliseum raged like a living beast, dark clouds coiling and writhing as bolts of black lightning tore across the sky.

And there I stood—barefoot, exhausted, still wearing the remnants of that ridiculous maid outfit under a conjured jacket—facing down the most terrifying woman in existence.

The Shadow Queen.

She stood at the center of the arena, obsidian scythe in hand, her long golden hair whipping violently in the storm winds. That dark crown above her head pulsed with a dangerous, ancient power.

"Liam Zhang," she called, her voice echoing through the massive stone pillars around us. "This is the final trial. Kneel… or fight."

Fight? Against her?

That was like asking a goldfish to punch a shark.

But something inside me snapped.

I clenched my fists so hard my nails bit into my palms. The memory of every humiliation, every moment of helplessness, every time I was pushed around in life—all of it surged through me like wildfire.

I stepped forward, shaky but defiant.

"I might be weak," I shouted against the howling wind, "but if you think I'm going to kneel without a fight—THINK AGAIN!"

The Shadow Queen smiled faintly.

"Good answer."

And then she moved.

Faster than sight, a blur of shadows and light.

The blade of her scythe appeared before my eyes, mere inches from my neck. The air turned razor-sharp, cutting at my skin even before the blade touched me.

I couldn't dodge.

I couldn't block.

So, I did the only thing left—I stood my ground.

Eyes closed, teeth clenched, waiting for the end.

But the strike… never landed.

A deep, painful heat exploded in my chest.

I fell to my knees, gasping for breath as agony surged through my veins like liquid fire. My vision swam. My body felt like it was being torn apart from the inside.

Then, the impossible happened.

My shadow—stretched across the cracked stone floor—moved on its own.

It rose upward, twisting and warping, taking on a life of its own.

At first, I thought it was some trick of the Queen's magic. But then I felt it.

The shadow was… protecting me.

A voice—ancient, distant, yet familiar—whispered through the storm.

"Bloodline recognized. Shadowborn inheritance… unlocked."

I had no idea what that meant, but the moment those words echoed in my head, the pain in my chest shifted—became power.

Raw. Uncontrollable. Terrifying.

The Queen took a step back, her eyes wide with something I had never seen before—surprise.

"Impossible…" she whispered. "The Shadowborn bloodline was lost ages ago… How—how do you possess it?"

I stumbled to my feet, breathing hard, my fists still clenched tight. My shadow flickered and snapped like a living creature, coiling protectively around me in twisting tendrils of darkness.

"I don't know what this is…" I gasped, barely able to control the surging power. "…but if this means I don't have to bow to anyone, then I'll take it!"

Lightning crashed behind me as if the storm itself approved.

The Queen raised her scythe again, her eyes burning with new intensity.

"Careful, Liam Zhang…" she said softly, stepping closer. "…with that bloodline comes more than power. It comes with a burden you're not ready for."

"Try me!" I shouted over the storm.

Without warning, she lunged.

I felt it this time—her speed. The way the shadows folded around her, the way her blade seemed to slice through reality itself.

And yet… my body moved.

I didn't think. I didn't plan.

My shadow reacted.

It lashed upward, forming a barrier of swirling darkness. The scythe struck it, and the entire arena shook with the force of the clash.

My legs almost gave out again, but the shadow held.

I held.

For the first time, I had stopped one of her attacks.

The Queen pulled back, breathing a little heavier now, her lips curled into a wild, dangerous grin.

"So… the little lamb has fangs after all."

I took a shaky step forward.

"You said this was a trial," I called out. "What happens if I win?"

Her smile widened.

"If you win, Liam Zhang… you'll no longer be my Caretaker."

I blinked. "Wait… seriously? You'll let me go?"

She shook her head slowly, eyes glowing brighter than ever.

"No. If you win… you'll stand beside me. Not as a servant…"

She raised her scythe high, and the storm roared louder than ever.

"…but as my equal."

My mind blanked.

Equal?

To the most powerful being in the Shadow Realm?

That wasn't just insane—it was impossible.

But deep inside, something else answered before my fear could speak.

Why not me?

I clenched my fists, feeling the power of my shadow swirling wildly around me.

This was no longer just about survival.

This was about proving that even the weakest, most insignificant human could rise when pushed to the brink.

And for the first time, standing in the heart of the storm, I believed…

I could win.
