Chapter 3 - THE SEARCH CONTINUES

In the streets of Harrison, young boys learned the ways of life in a harsh and unconventional manner. Many were swayed into deceit by the seemingly successful but wayward lifestyle of the "big" boys. Vicky, a young man in his early thirties, was handsome, tall, elegant, and educationally sound, but he often went unnoticed due to the street he lived on and his reserved nature.

Vicky lived a modest lifestyle with his ailing mother, Caroline, who had dedicated herself to helping her son stand on his own two feet. Their home was a barely constructed building, and the state of the house revealed their living conditions. The faded blue paint was peeling off, the entrance was narrow and uncomfortable, and visitors had to squeeze through the tiny passage to reach Vicky's manageable apartment.

Caroline, in her late 60s, was dark-skinned, unlike Vicky. She had married Raheem, Vicky's father, at a young age. Their marriage didn't last due to Raheem's extramarital affairs and violent behavior. Caroline left the marriage with Vicky, and Raheem's life spiraled downward. He squandered his wealth and eventually committed suicide.

After Raheem's death, Caroline confronted his family for a share of his wealth. Despite their resistance, she persisted and eventually received some compensation. She started working with the little money she received but had an accident that affected her right knee. Vicky took up the responsibility of caring for the household and prohibited Caroline from working.

Vicky emerged from the tiny bathroom, he puts on a short and tank top and heads to his mother's room. "Mom, are you awake?" he asked, knocking on the door. When there was no response, he entered the room and sat beside her. Caroline lay still, ignoring Vicky's presence.

"Mum...." Vicky continued, placing his hands on her shoulder. "You can't keep ignoring me....." "Yes.. I can, I will continue ignoring you until you get your sense back..." Caroline said sharply. "Ouch..., Mum that's a bit harsh, are you saying I am senseless?" "Yes, you are..." Caroline responded.

Vicky tried to persuade her, explaining his job search struggles. "Look.., mum, I have been trying to get a job and it's not working out for me, most interviews I have been through have been tough and very disappointing..." Caroline's response was harsh, blaming Vicky for his circumstances.

"Why wouldn't it be disappointing, you are dumb..., You had a good life back in Dillsville.., you were earning but then you decided to throw it all away, chasing after... " Vicky interrupted, "Mum.., please don't.. , I don't want to think about those things anymore..."

Caroline turned her face away, but Vicky continued, "Look mum... I Know you want the best for me.. and believe me I have been putting in a lot of effort to make you happy..., I have been searching for jobs..., Working hard..."

Caroline interrupted, "Love...." "What...." Vicky inquired. "Love, Vicky... Love, are you searching for love... " Caroline asked. Vicky smiled and said, "No mum, love is the reason why we are in this situation..."

"Love is not the reason, you are the reason, you made the wrong choice..." Caroline said. Vicky sighed and said, "Mum, like I said earlier, I don't want to talk about this issue..., Believe me when I say that I am still open to live but it's not my priority..."

Caroline's expression softened, and she said, "Son.., I didn't get the love I desperately needed and I don't want that for you... , Just keep an open heart." Vicky nodded, "Okay mum.., I have heard you...., Can we have breakfast..."

Caroline smiles ," sure son, I will freshen up and cook something for you... "

"No, Mum, have you forgotten what the doctor said? No stress, Mum... no stress. Come on, I'll lead you to the bathroom, and then I'll go get some ingredients for breakfast," Vicky said, helping his mother up. She limped a bit but managed to enter the bathroom.

Vicky rushed back to his room, picked up his phone, which was in a terrible state – held together with six rubber bands. Any slight crack could render it useless. He searched online for available jobs but found none. Shaking his head in disappointment, he muttered, " we are running out of money and resources I need a job.... ( He pauses for a while ), hope ...Vicky, hope ..." Dropping his phone, Vicky headed out to purchase ingredients for breakfast. In the streets of Harrison, young boys learned the ways of life in a harsh and unconventional manner.
