Chapter 118 - A tired woman

IMARA'S POV

I wiped my face with the back of my hand and stood up from beside that empty bed. The tears had stopped, but my chest still felt hollow. Like someone had scooped out everything inside and left me with just skin and bones.

I couldn't stay in this room. Not with her bed staring at me. Not with the memory of that servant girl smiling while she cleaned blood from the floor. Blood that belonged to a girl who died for missing dinner.

My feet carried me out of the room before I made the decision to leave. The hallways were brighter now, most of the torches had burned out. Guards stood at their posts like statues, eyes forward, not acknowledging me. They probably didn't care where I went or what I did, as long as I didn't try to leave the palace.
