Chapter 2 - a new home

The crimson sun bled across the sky, casting long, skeletal shadows from the decaying metal forests. Xylar adjusted their breathing mask, the recycled air thick with the metallic tang of industry. This world, their world, was dying. The once-vibrant ecosystems were now choked with rust and decay, the air thick with toxins that burned the throat and stung the eyes. Their people, the Kryll, were a shadow of their former selves, their bodies adapted to a world that no longer existed. But Xylar was different. They could feel the whispers of the dying planet, the faint echoes of its former life. And they knew, with a certainty that burned like the crimson sun, that there was a way out. Their mission, to find a new home for the Kryll, was more than just survival. It was a chance to reclaim their future, to breathe life back into their dying race. And Xylar, with their unique ability to sense the faintest traces of life across the stars, was their only hope.

They stood on the edge of the Launchpad, the ground trembling beneath their feet. The transport ship, a sleek, silver arrow, hissed and groaned, eager to break free from the dying world's grasp. Xylar closed their eyes, focusing on the faint pulse of energy they had detected weeks ago – a beacon of life in the vast emptiness of space. It was faint, almost imperceptible, but it was there. Hope. And Xylar would follow it, no matter the cost.

The launch was rough, the ship bucking and shuddering as it tore through the atmosphere. Xylar gripped the control panel, their knuckles white, and focused on the energy signature. It grew stronger, clearer, as they hurtled through the void. They were getting closer.

Hours bled into days, the only sound the hum of the engines and the whisper of the void outside. Xylar tended to the ship, their movements precise and efficient, but their mind was elsewhere. They thought of their people, their faces gaunt and weary, their eyes filled with a desperate hope. They thought of the stories their elders told, of a world bathed in blue light, where the air was clean and the water sparkled like liquid diamonds. A world called Earth.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the ship's sensors pinged. A blue-green sphere filled the viewport, swirling with clouds and oceans. Earth. Xylar felt a surge of triumph, a fierce joy that almost overwhelmed them. They had done it. They had found their new home.

But as they approached, a flicker of unease danced in their mind. The energy signature... it was stronger now, yes, but there was something else, too. A discordant note, a faint echo of something... broken. Xylar frowned, their fingers tightening on the controls. They had come so far, risked everything. They wouldn't let anything stand in their way now.
