Chapter 244 - Chapter 244: Is This Soulblade Specter Cheating?

Chapter 244: Is This Soulblade Specter Cheating?

The four Nascent Soul cultivators were baffled.

Hasn't the Soul Shattering Sword already gone off twice? Why, after they arrived, was there suddenly another Heaven-grade Soulblade Specter?

Could it be that, after countless years of absence, three Heaven-grade Soulblade Specters had appeared at once? Even if that were the case, where were the other two?

And what about the Sword Sect's Nascent Soul peak master and that terrifying young man who had also come to hunt the Soulblade Specters?

Had they already captured the other two and left?

"What… what exactly is going on here?"

One of the Nascent Soul sword cultivators, a scattered cultivator, was visibly unsettled.

The Heaven-grade Soulblade Specter was right in front of them, yet the four Nascent Souls hesitated.

The elderly Nascent Soul cultivator, who had just retrieved his Sixth Sword, narrowed his eyes. With a wave of his hand, the six treasured swords orbiting him shot forward—but none struck the Soulblade Specter.

Cautious as he was, he wanted to observe the situation a little longer.

However, the Soulblade Specter, wreathed in black mist, suddenly froze in midair. Its twisted face, with its blood-red eyes, locked onto one of the six flying swords.

Then came a piercing howl.

In an instant, the Soulblade Specter vanished from where it stood—only to reappear right beside that very sword, slamming its clawed hand down upon it.

Black mist engulfed the blade, snuffing out its spiritual glow. The sword plummeted, crashing into the ground.

The elderly Nascent Soul cultivator's eyes widened in shock.

What was going on?

Everyone had taken up battle stances, yet the Soulblade Specter had chosen to attack him first? Was his luck just that terrible today?

Then his gaze fell upon his fallen sword, now embedded in the ground— and sure enough, it was the one he had just reclaimed!

This moment was eerily identical to before.

How could it be this similar?

Before he could even process the implications, a chill ran down his spine.

The blood-red, crazed eyes of the Soulblade Specter had followed some unseen connection—locking onto him.

The surrounding forces of heaven and earth were suppressed in an instant. Teleportation was now impossible.

"Soul Shattering Sword?!"

Now down to just five swords, the elderly cultivator was utterly dumbfounded.

They hadn't even properly engaged the Soulblade Specter yet—why was it already unleashing its desperation move? Was this batch of Soulblade Specters just mentally unstable?

But there was no more time to think. The Soulblade Specter had already tilted its grotesque head back, preparing to let out its devastating shriek.

The four Nascent Souls braced themselves for the impact.

Yet, aside from the elderly sword cultivator, the other three couldn't hide the hint of excitement in their eyes.

Judging by the Soulblade Specter's behavior, the curse that specifically targeted sword cultivators was most likely going to fall upon him.

As long as they endured the indiscriminate explosion, they would have the perfect opportunity to strike down a completely drained Soulblade Specter…

But what happened next left them all stunned.

Just as the Soulblade Specter was about to let out its cry, streaks of lightning suddenly crackled across its body.

The Soul Shattering Sword technique was forcefully suppressed, unable to activate. The only effect that remained was the suppression of teleportation.

The Soulblade Specter, seemingly unwilling to accept this, tried to unleash the attack again.

But no matter how hard it tried, nothing happened.

The elderly sword cultivator, now reduced to five swords, nearly had a heart attack from the sheer emotional whiplash.

But— what the hell was up with this Soulblade Specter?!

<+>

"Sure enough, it's still that same Soulblade Specter…"

Luo Wusheng let out a quiet sigh.

He sat beneath the massive ancient tree, side by side with Ling Shuangxue, their hands gently intertwined.

Of course… this was merely part of using the special aura-concealing technique the girl beside him possessed.

Although the duration wasn't long, and any obvious movement would break the effect, the concealment technique was remarkably effective.

Previously, it had allowed Luo Wusheng to remain undetected outside Daybreak Mountain until he chose to reveal himself. Now, it hid both him and Ling Shuangxue as they focused on their recovery—one mending the wounds inflicted by Soul Shattering Sword, the other fully regathering her dissipated sword intent.

If everything had gone according to plan, Ling Shuangxue should have stabilized by now and used the Sword Sect's secret techniques to seal away the dying Soulblade Specter.

Once that was done, today's ordeal would have been over.

Luo Wusheng could have happily collected the Sword Enlightenment Incense he was promised from the Sword Sect's fairy—perhaps even receiving a few extra canisters of her Sword Nurturing Tea if her fondness for him had grown.

But…

Gazing at the erratic, enraged Soulblade Specter, now flailing in impotent frustration, Luo Wusheng felt a headache coming on.

During his recovery, Ling Shuangxue had explained everything that had transpired. And now, he was seeing it firsthand.

'A Soulblade Specter that can repeatedly use Soul Shattering Sword… is this the protagonist of all Soulblade Specters? Everyone else gets one self-destruction, but you can spam yours? What kind of cheat is this?'

As he silently complained, Luo Wusheng's gaze cautiously shifted to his side.

The lingering sensation of holding a certain heavenly beauty in his arms was still fresh in his hands…

Originally, he had only meant to sneak a glance at her condition.

However, the moment his gaze shifted, his movement froze slightly.

The girl beside him was staring directly at him, her enchanting eyes completely unguarded.

Under that unwavering gaze, his sneaky attempt at observation was utterly exposed.

Yet, she didn't look away in the slightest.

Feeling a bit awkward, Luo Wusheng forced himself to remain composed, clearing his throat. "Ahem— Do you still have confidence in subduing that Soulblade Specter?"

Ling Shuangxue quietly studied the young man beside her, lost in thought for a moment, before shaking her head lightly.

"If it can continue using the Soul Shattering Sword as it did before, then even at full strength, I wouldn't stand a chance… But looking at its current state…"

Her bright eyes flickered slightly, reflecting Luo Wusheng's image within them.

The Soulblade Specter had failed to unleash Soul Shattering Sword multiple times in a row. It wasn't hard to guess why.

But she didn't say it out loud, instead falling into contemplation.

"…There is something unusual about this Soulblade Specter."

"It's not just the ability to use the Soul Shattering Sword multiple times… It has also remained in Daybreak Mountain for far too long."

"Soulblade Specters are born in madness. While they possess some level of self-preservation, destruction is in their very nature. They shouldn't be able to stay in one place so quietly for such an extended period… This is why Soulblade Specters are always discovered and dealt with quickly."

"It's just that Heaven-grade Soulblade Specters have been absent for so long that even I overlooked this detail."

Shifting her gaze from Luo Wusheng to the distant figure in the sky, Ling Shuangxue frowned slightly. "Its aura… seems stronger than when it first appeared…"

Luo Wusheng rubbed his chin.

This was no ordinary Heaven-grade Soulblade Specter.

Every time it detonated, it regenerated as if undergoing some kind of transformation—each explosion making it stronger. This was an absurdly broken ability.

And from Ling Shuangxue's words, it seemed she suspected something within Daybreak Mountain itself was affecting the Soulblade Specter…

Luo Wusheng's eyes flickered with thought.

There was one more thing that concerned him.

For some reason, the Soulblade Specter was now unable to activate Soul Shattering Sword, seemingly due to the remnant tribulation lightning he had left within its body.

Moreover, each time it attempted to unleash the technique, he felt a strange, fleeting connection through the lightning entwined around it.

The sensation disappeared too quickly for him to grasp any meaning from it.

As he pondered, he suddenly felt the hand holding his own tighten slightly.

"What's wrong?"

Alert, Luo Wusheng turned to look at the girl beside him.

Ling Shuangxue hesitated for a brief moment before shaking her head. "It's nothing…"

Even as she said that, her gaze unconsciously dropped to their joined hands.

'If the Soulblade Specter had already been dealt with… then right now…'
