Chapter 10 - starting a war

The crisp morning air bit at my cheeks, a stark contrast to the stifling anxiety that had filled the cabin. Dawn was just breaking, painting the snow-covered landscape in hues of pink and orange. Towering pines stood sentinel against the brightening sky, their branches heavy with the recent snowfall. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional rustle of wind through the trees. It was a scene of breathtaking beauty, yet I couldn't shake the feeling of impending dread.

I walked a short distance from the cabin, my boots crunching on the fresh snow. The tracks from our arrival were already disappearing, swallowed by the relentless winter. It was as if the wilderness was trying to erase our presence, to reclaim the space we had briefly occupied. I reached a small clearing and stopped, gazing out at the vast expanse of forest. It felt like we were the only people left in the world, isolated and vulnerable against a powerful, unseen enemy.

A sudden movement caught my eye. A deer, its coat the color of dried leaves, emerged from the trees, its breath misting in the cold air. It paused, its large, brown eyes fixed on me, then gracefully leaped across the clearing and disappeared back into the woods. It was a fleeting moment of wild beauty, a reminder that life continued even in the face of darkness.

As I watched the deer vanish, I realized something: we weren't just fighting against Westgate; we were fighting for something. We were fighting for the future, for the preservation of the world as we knew it. We were fighting for the freedom of those who couldn't fight for themselves. The weight of that responsibility settled heavily on my shoulders, but this time, it didn't feel so crushing. It felt like a purpose, a reason to keep going, even when the odds seemed insurmountable.

I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the clean, crisp air. The fear was still there, but it was tempered with a newfound resolve. I would not let Westgate win. I would not let them destroy everything we held dear. I would fight, and I would fight with everything I had.

Turning back towards the cabin, I saw Marcus standing in the doorway, watching me. He didn't say anything, but his presence was enough. He understood. He knew what I was feeling.

As I walked back, a plan started to form in my mind. We couldn't just wait for Westgate to attack. We had to be proactive. We had to take the fight to them. We had to expose their secrets and dismantle their operations, piece by piece. It would be dangerous, but it was our only chance.

Reaching Marcus, I nodded, a silent acknowledgment of our shared understanding. "We need to come up with a plan," I said, my voice firm. "A plan to take down Westgate, once and for all."

A flicker of a smile crossed his lips. "I thought you'd never ask," he replied. "Breakfast first, then war."
