Ezra's POV

Disgusting, filthy, and messy.

That was all I could think of as I washed my slightly trembling hands in a golden basin filled with rose petals.

No matter how many times I washed my hands, the warmth of the breeder's skin still felt so present, as if she were standing right in front of me.

"Shit," I muttered as I washed harder.

I could still remember the way she had looked at me when I grabbed her by the neck.

Those damn eyes.

Why did she have to look at me like that?

I dipped my hands into the water again, rubbing my fingers together.

I wanted nothing to do with that lowlife besides giving her my seed. If not for the Oracle's revelation of the future of my nests, I would never have agreed to his decision or gone in search of her.

But then, if I were to refuse, the deaths that would soon follow would be my responsibility. Everyone would blame me and lose their trust in me as their Lord.

I couldn't allow that to happen.

My nests had survived countless disasters, and I had spent years making sure they remained strong. I wasn't going to watch everything fall apart simply because I refused to bed some weak she-wolf.

Among all the strong supernatural clans the Oracle could have picked, why the werewolf pack?

They were weak and had no magic.

And they acted like saints who looked down on our kind for bonding with more than one partner.

To them, they only had one bond, which they called a mate.

To me, it was a sign of weakness.

A true leader or strong male bonded with more than one female. That was the rule of my nests.

Those who stuck to one were pathetic.

That's why I had a few females serving me. But they were never allowed in my bed or permitted to cross a certain line that was meant only for Rachel.

"Dear, haven't you washed your hands enough?"

Rachel asked softly.

I glanced at her for a second and smirked.

She lay on our bed in a see-through silky robe that showed off her pretty body.

"I'm done," I answered.

I picked up a towel and dried my hands.

When I turned to face her, she smiled politely.

Her hair spread across the sheets, making her look breathtaking. From her body scent and the way she watched me, I could tell she was aroused.

She was gorgeous.

A very gorgeous human.

But then, she was nothing compared to that filthy breeder I bedded.

I frowned at my own thoughts.

What nonsense was I thinking?

As much as my heart belonged to Rachel, I couldn't help but appreciate that lowlife's body.

Her skin was so soft under my touch. Her curves were full, and her hips were wide, a good sign to my kind that showed she was very fertile.

Her lips were full and plump.

And her eyes...

I avoided them as much as I could because every time they were filled with tears, my fingers itched to brush them away.

It was ridiculous.

Why would I want to comfort someone I had no feelings for?

She was like a damn curse I was trying to keep away from, yet I couldn't stop observing her.

Even now, after leaving her room, I couldn't get her out of my mind.

Especially those words she had said.

When you hold me, can you try to be gentle?

I clenched my jaw.

Why was I remembering that?

I am not asking you to kiss me or hold my hand. Just don't hurt me.

"Enough," I muttered.

"Lord Ezra?"

Rachel called softly while sitting upright.

I quickly pushed those thoughts aside and moved at the edge of the bed, dropping the towel to the floor.

She brushed her hand through her hair, making sure every gesture was seductive.

I swallowed hard and moved my tail.

It wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer.

She giggled and gently caressed my scales while we stood an inch apart.

My mind was screaming for me to take her there and then.

To kiss her lips and savour her taste.

Yet my body wasn't reacting at all.

I felt nothing.

Not even a tiny bit of arousal.

"My Lord," she whispered seductively as she moved her arms around my shoulders, pulling me closer.

My lips were about to brush hers when I suddenly pulled away.

My tail gently unwrapped from her waist.

For a second, I saw anger rather than disappointment in her eyes.

But it was quickly replaced by sadness.

"My Lord, you still can't hold me?" she asked sadly.

I felt terrible.

But I couldn't stop the way my body reacted on its own.

She was beautiful.

Sexy too.

Yet no matter what I did, I couldn't get aroused or bring myself to kiss her properly.

It had been like this for a long time.

The last time, I drank an aphrodisiac potion and tried to force myself to go through with it.

I ended up throwing up and passing out in pain because I couldn't relieve myself the way I thought I could with her.

Not even magic helped.

I had tried everything I could think of.

Potions.

Magic.

Even consulting ancient records about my kind.

Nothing worked.

"Not today, Rachel. My body is tired," I lied.

The same lie I always came up with.

She lowered her gaze.

I hated seeing her disappointed.

But what could I possibly do?

I still didn't understand why it was always different with that lowlife she-wolf.

And I despised the thought of her being the first woman I bedded.

I had imagined countless times how my first time would be.

Before even meeting Rachel, I had pictured it all.

Sadly, back then, I was too busy with the nests to have time for any intimacy.

There were always problems to solve.

Disputes between the nests.

Warriors demanding attention.

Elders who couldn't agree on anything.

And the responsibility of being a Lord who couldn't afford to make mistakes.

When I crossed paths with Rachel, she became all I wanted and could think of.

Yet it only ended in imagination as well because I couldn't bed her.

I hated my cursed body because it only reacted to that worthless weakling, to the extent that I couldn't control myself or hold myself back.

And that made me furious.

What did she have that Rachel didn't?

She was a weak she-wolf.

A werewolf who couldn't even defend herself properly.

She had no magic, no important position, and nothing special that should have attracted someone like me.

Yet the moment I entered her room, my body reacted before I could even think.

Her scent alone was enough to disturb me.

And whenever I touched her, it became worse.

Her tears made my heart ache whenever I held her roughly, yet my mind couldn't accept that I was enjoying holding her when the woman I loved was being neglected.

So I became even rougher with her.

I wanted to hate her.

I wanted her to understand that she meant nothing to me.

But every time I left her room, I found myself thinking about what had happened.

Tonight had been no different.

I had nearly lost control when she grabbed my hand.

Not because she had hurt me.

Not because I was afraid of her.

But because the moment her fingers touched mine, I felt something I couldn't explain.

It had frightened me more than I wanted to admit.

And when I saw her lying on the floor, trembling after I shoved her away, something inside me had urged me to reach for her.

I had ignored it.

Between us, there was a transaction, not love, care, or respect.

She was only a breeding tool, and I was going to treat her like one.

The one my heart chose and wanted was Rachel.

And no one else.

"I understand, my Lord. I won't push any further," Rachel said sadly.

I sighed softly and then pulled off my veil.

Her face instantly brightened as she smiled widely.

She had a thing for my face, something she made sure to remind me of regularly.

That's why I wore a veil to begin with.

When we officially decided to be together, she made me promise never to let anyone see my full face.

Not even the other females who entertained me.

My face was only hers to see because she was the one I belonged to.

It was a weird request.

But seeing how happy she became when I agreed, I decided to do it for as long as it would make her happy.

She moved closer and placed her hands on my cheeks.

"Now this, I love," she whispered.

She stood on her toes and kissed my cheek.

"My Lord, promise me you will never let that worthless mutt or any other female see your face. Ever," she said seriously.

I smiled and leaned in, kissing her forehead before nodding.

Immediately, I felt my throat grow dry and my skin crawl.

I just couldn't stomach the feeling of kissing her, even if it wasn't on the lips.

What was wrong with me?

Why did something so simple feel so difficult?

"I'm happy," she said cheerfully and wrapped her arms around my waist.

I held her back.

Her scent was simple, and many female serpents had scents far better than hers.

But that worthless breeder's scent was the best.

It made my mouth water and aroused me.

It also gave me the urge to bite her nape.

Something my kind never did.

Serpents didn't mark their partners the way werewolves did.

We formed bonds differently.

So why did I keep having that strange urge whenever I was close to her?

I had no idea what was happening to me.

All I knew was that I was experiencing things I hated and never thought I would go through.

"Lord Ezra?"

Rachel's voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Hmm?"

"Are you thinking about something?"

I looked down at her.

"No."

She studied my face for a moment.

"Then why do you look so troubled?"

I gently removed her arms from my waist.

"There's a lot happening in the nests. You know that."

She nodded slowly.

"Is it because of that woman?"

My eyes narrowed.

"What woman?"

She hesitated.

"The breeder."

I said nothing.

Rachel lowered her gaze and began playing with the edge of her robe.

"I know she's important to the prophecy, my Lord. I understand why you have to visit her. But..."

She stopped.

"But what?" I asked.

She looked up at me with sadness in her eyes.

"I'm afraid."

"Of what?"

"That one day you'll begin to care about her."

I almost laughed.

"Rachel."

She shook her head.

"I know she's nothing compared to me. I know you don't love her. But she's the one who can give you something I can't."

I stared at her.

"An heir," she whispered.

I sighed.

"You're worrying about something that will never happen."

"Promise?"

I placed my hand on her cheek.

"She's only here because of the prophecy. Once she gives me an heir, she'll leave."

Rachel's expression softened.

"And you'll never see her again?"

"There's no reason for me to."

She smiled.

"Then I'm happy."

I nodded and turned my gaze toward the window.

But something about the promise I had just made didn't sit well with me.

I ignored it.

After all, what reason would I have to keep that woman around once she had served her purpose?

None.

Absolutely none.

Yet for some strange reason, I remembered her voice again.

Do your worst, Ezra. I have been through worse.

My fingers curled slowly.

I had heard those words clearly.

And I still couldn't understand why they bothered me so much.
