Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: A Dangerous Line

Far off, eyes traced her every move. Stillness didn't fool anyone. Something waited just beyond sight.

Midway through crossing the threshold, shadows pooled around the edges of her vision. A presence lingered, unseen yet certain, like breath before speech. Not fear, just memory teaching her when silence lies.

Out of the corner of her eye, he appeared. She had already given her order, standing easy, looking past the window, then across the room. Quiet filled the space now, most people gone, just a couple left at separate tables. That is when recognition clicked.

Damien.

Back there, relaxed, his arm hung loose across the seat next to him. A costly black suit dressed him, fitting for someone used to winning without effort. Not a fighter, but a winner by nature. What stood in his way tended to vanish, quietly, like smoke off stone.

A quiet grin tugged at his mouth as their gazes locked - Selene felt a pull low in her belly. Waiting, he'd stood there long before she arrived.

She pushed aside her nerves, picked up the cup, moved by his side while looking away. A slow breath escaped as she acted unbothered.

Out so early? That quiet tone of his slipped under her skin like ice. Just a breath caught in place - then she turned. What is it now, Damien?

A shadow passed behind his eyes, though his grin stayed put. Take a seat

Maybe she could just walk off. Leave him standing there. Yet something told her - Damien never let things go like that.

Slumping down opposite him, she let out a breath. Go on, speak your mind

A flicker of something sharp crossed Damien's face as he studied her, head slightly turned. The way she held herself made him pause, almost smirk. Lately, her choices in companions had grown harder to ignore

Heart jumped. It was Kieran.

That's none of your concern, she said, her tone steady. Forward he shifted, arms propped on the tabletop. Mine you remain, though silent at first, then spoken clear.

Suddenly tense, Selene caught her breath. That name shouldn't come from his lips, not after what happened - yet she clamped down on the rest, unwilling to let him watch her break.

Damien chuckled, low and knowing. "When I asked for an open marriage?" He shook his head. "Selene, don't be naive. You knew what you were getting into when you married me." Her fingers curled into fists under the table. "No," she said softly, but with steel in her voice. "I thought I did. I was wrong."

A shadow crossed his face. Now what? He wondered if finding Kieran would really keep her safe. She reacted without thinking it through - Damien noticed - and his grin stretched a little further.

Ah," he said softly. About him then, it turns out. Her eyes locked onto his, fear edged aside by fury. I am not yours, Damien. A shift crossed his face - tight, sharp, like a wire pulled taut. Near enough now that his words fell low and close: You really believe that? The air caught in her lungs - but another figure arrived, stepping into the moment.

That figure again, standing firm. Not loud, yet impossible to ignore. Always there when needed most.

Not sure I asked you here. Kieran spoke low, yet sharp enough to sting. Selene shifted as he dropped into the chair next to her, tight like a coiled wire. Eyes black as storm clouds met Damien's, daring him without words. The space between them hardened like cooling stone.

Fingers tapping slow on the table, Damien showed teeth in what almost looked like a smile - yet his gaze stayed sharp, distant. Kieran stood in the doorway, and the room tightened

Kieran leaned back, utterly calm, but his presence was a storm waiting to break. "You should leave." Damien's smirk deepened. "Why? Are you afraid of a little conversation?" Kieran didn't blink. "No. But I have a feeling you won't like where it ends."

Breathing out, Selene felt her heartbeat loud in the quiet. After staring at Kieran without speaking, Damien shifted his eyes to Selene. Soon, he said, I'll see you again, love

Up he got, straightening his jacket like the moment meant nothing, then headed off. Not until the café's door clicked closed did Selene breathe again, slow and shaky. Her eyes met Kieran's. He looked tense. You good? That was what he asked

Selene gave a small nod, though the weight of what happened pressed hard inside her. Crossing that line with Damien - today of all days - left her wondering if return was even possible. Here's the twist: maybe she didn't wish to go back at all.
