Chapter 2 - Shadows In The Blood

r-like patterns of light appeared on the cold floor of Kaia's bedroom as the morning sun peeked through the blinds. The memories curt her—strange silhouettes, whispers of the woods, the blaring ache of moonlit skin. She remained expressionless and still as if frozen under the ponderous weight of the past night. Strangely, her phone buzzed, snapping her out of the moment, followed by her staring at the screen with Stephan's name staring back at her.

The familiar noise from the Monroe street indicated everybody in the house was busy going about, with her noting Stephan's slow yet defined footsteps as she heard faint laughter from the kitchen which had to be Raine. Kaia rubbed her eyes, her head spinning with new realizations.

Spoonfuls of life in the Monroe have begun digging into my existence, She thought while taking it easy on herself. Sweating inside dark colored garments which bore instability together with multi-toned inner chaos further revealed themselves to be all negatives of life surging forth outside. During the school day, screaming pain started gnawing at the back, turning into primal ache intermingling with overwhelming desire to be followed into oblivion.

As if carving a place for themselves away from nosey eyes, safe and secure, she found Raine at the back of the gym. Raine's look became less harsh and more gentle.

That soft, intelligent voice almost shattered the silence when she noticed Kaia's pale complexion. "Tell me what's on your mind," after lightly caressing Kaia's forehead hair, stated Raine. "I don't even know where to begin," she replied shaking her head. "I know this is complicated, but rest assured, you are not alone," as she spoke, describing with her thumb the outline of Kaia's bottom lip and cheek, she gestured with her hand. "Enough," the bell's intrusive sound ended the scene abruptly. Quietly hearing footwear race and smash against one another, Kaia stilled, burdened by the torrents of unspoken truths dragging with her along the crowded hallways beneath stairs overpasses and at bus stops in claustrophobic buses, whilst boat ferrying over the surface of water, "does anyone truly have the potential of fathoming the dirge that I am unrililng?" she thought.
