Elena's POV

Then Anna said, "You okay?"

"No."

I didn't elaborate.

She didn't ask again.

We drove for a while, neither of us speaking. Just the hum of the road and the echo of everything we didn't find. I stared out the window, jaw clenched, fingers drumming against my thigh.

Damian.

It had to be him.

He was the only one who'd been that close, that unnoticed. He had touched the counter. Sat there like it was nothing. And I—stupid, distracted, hopeful—I let him.

"I should've known," I muttered.

Anna glanced at me. "You trusted him."

"I shouldn't have."

"He used to love you."

I looked at her. "He still does. That's the problem."

Her mouth pressed into a line.

The car slowed as we reached the edge of the city.

I exhaled hard. "He's the only one who had time to switch it. The only one who knew we'd been working with that drive."

"And now Roth has it," Anna said. "If he hasn't destroyed it already."
