The news spread through the pack like wildfire: a man would be chosen to serve as the main envoy between the werewolves and the vampires.
This person would attend meetings in the vampire land, carry messages, and ensure the treaty between both kingdoms stayed strong. It was a big deal, and everyone knew it.
Only the best could be chosen. He had to be smart, strong, loyal, and brave. Many young wolves stepped forward to compete, but only a few would pass the tests.
Xavier knew what he wanted.
He had seen the way the Alpha whispered with the vampire lord during the wedding banquet. He had seen the fear in Zoey's eyes. There was a lot he was ignorant about but he knew he wouldn't breathe if anything happened to Zoey. His wolf recognized her as his mate, but for some reason, she may have liked him but didn't recognize him. Xavier wasn't one to butt into situations like that. But he couldn't deny it. He didn't care if Zoey never recognized him, he just wanted her Alive.
And maybe, if he could become the envoy, he would find a way to protect her.
The moment the announcement came, Xavier went to his father.
"Father, I wish to apply."
His father looked up from the scroll he was reading. "Apply? For what?"
"For the envoy position. I want to go to the vampire land."
The room fell silent.
His mother turned around sharply. "No. Xavier, you will try no such thing."
His sister, Sara, saw this cominh. She stood by the window, eyes wide. "Are you mad? You know what they say about vampires. They drain you dry."
Xavier stayed calm. "I've made up my mind. I want to do this. And I'm going as an envoy. Literally, I'll be a member of the royal council and not some."
His father shook his head slowly. "It's dangerous. The vampire land is not for people like us. And you— you're still young."
"I'm old enough to train. Old enough to lead. Why not old enough to go?"
His mother's voice was sharp. "Because you're our son. Anyone else can go and not you."
"That's not a reason to hold me back," Xavier said firmly. "I want to do it. No! I have to do it"
His father sighed. "You can apply. But if you fail, you forget about it."
"Deal," Xavier replied.
The next morning, Xavier signed up.
The tests began. Over five days, the candidates were tested in strength, speed, strategy, and diplomacy. Xavier woke early, trained hard, and studied late. He fought with focus. He ran like the wind. He spoke with clarity. All the while, he kept one thing in mind: Zoey.
He had seen her disappear into the vampire's van. No one had spoken about it since. People acted like it never happened. But he remembered.
On the sixth day, the Alpha stood before the crowd.
"The results are ready," he announced.
A scroll was unrolled. The names of the top five candidates were written in bold. Xavier's name stood at the top.
"First place: Xavier of Clan Storm."
He heard gasps around him. His heart pounded.
The Alpha nodded toward him. "You will attend the next envoy meeting. In three days, you leave for the vampire kingdom."
Xavier bowed his head.
He had won.
But when he returned home, his family did not celebrate.
His mother stood in the doorway, tears in her eyes. "Why, Xavier? Why are you doing this?"
"Mother. Isn't this good. Don't worry, I'll balance my education and every other thing."
His father's voice was hard. "Don't play hero."
"It's not about being a hero. It's about doing what I want."
His sister turned . "Since when did you care about all this type of stuff?"
Xavier didn't answer .He went to his room to get a good night rest. He has gone through a lot..
Eric had participated in this same competition so he could go out and meet his girlfriend. His mated.
Eric came in second and was displeased about it but the Alpha gave him the permission to assist Xavier as the Envoy to be second in command.
Eric had never liked Xavier. Not when he passed the exams in school since he was smarter.
Not when he stepped up to defend Zoey or even Ryan.
And definitely not when his looks made Calista's heart f
lutter for a little while.
Eric was ready to do anything to become the main envoy.
