Kiah couldn't keep reading. Her stomach churned, and she had to tear her eyes from the page before the urge to vomit overwhelmed her. A wave of dizziness swept over her.
The others looked just as sickened, their faces pale with shock. Now the pieces fit together — the cemetery, the cries, the secrecy. It all made sense.
She couldn't stay seated any longer. The room felt suffocating. Forcing herself up, she crossed to the window, yanked the curtains aside, and let in a sharp breath of cold air.
Outside, the sun was already dipping toward the horizon. All across Fallowmere, lanterns glimmered, and strains of lively music drifted on the breeze. The farmers they'd seen earlier had left the fields also.
The party had already started while the supposed guests of honor wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of this town.
Kiah exhaled heavily. 'Indeed, ignorance is bliss. I should have remained oblivious.'
