I rolled quickly to the far end of my bed which was farthest from the door, and laid there. Well, I laid on the bed while my head was up, waiting for the slightest form of danger so as to jump out of the bed.
The Beta, now a wolf pushed heavily at the door some more, and each time he did, I felt my wolf whimpering in so much fear from within me. His abilities were far more savage as a wolf than as a man, and having experienced his savage treatments as a man, I didn't want to experience him as a wolf, not after the attack which had nearly taken out my eyes.
Beta Maverick gave one last forceful push that I feared that the door would give way but it didn't. My bed, resting against the door prevented it from giving way.
I sighed when I heard the Beta retreating, but my eyes flung open in horror when I realized that he was heading outside.
No!
It was far too risky to go outside, especially with every member of the pack on the lookout for the rogue Wolf. I wished I could make him stop, I wish I could make him remain in any of the other rooms he usually stayed during his abnormal shifting. It was obvious he didn't take the herb water I served him earlier, as that would have enabled him to be much more in control than he was now.
Outside, he became more violent. His growling increased, and so did the sound made as he moved about. I heard the sound of metals crashing, and wished he wouldn't make so much noise. We were closet to the Alpha, and if he heard the sound made by the Beta, and sent his guards or the pack's warriors out, the Beta would be as good as dead. But the Beta didn't seem to care. His thinking ability seemed to have reduced to the barest minimum.
I laid on the bed with my eyes fixed on the ceiling. I couldn't help but fear for the worst until I could no longer think or feel afraid as my whole body and mind gradually went numb,a sign that I was drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
********
Distant noises woke me up the next morning, and when I became fully awake, I realized that they weren't distant at all. They sounded from right outside the door. I was on the bed which was still against the door, and for a slight second, I wondered why the position of my bed had changed, and then I remembered.
I shot out of the bed, and pushed it be back into its usual position after which I stepped out. The noise outside was made by the pack's warriors, and when I saw what they fussed about, I knew it was worth fussing about. The Beta's rocking chair was in shambles, the whole compound was a mess, with holes dug around most of the place. This was surely the work of Beta Maverick from last night, I thought, and kept a straight face.
"Where is Beta Maverick?" One of the warriors called harshly the moment he noticed my presence, and my breath hitched. Of course he wouldn't ask me anything about the mess made in the compound even though I may have heard the noise as I wasn't seen as anything in the pack, other than as a pet or even a human. In fact, the warrior only asked me about the Beta because they could not barge into the Beta's apartment, seeing his position in the pack.
"He is..." I was going to say but Beta Maverick was already outside, and he responded to the warriors, cutting me off.
"I'm right here," Beta Maverick called from behind me, and I turned towards him. He regarded me with the corner of his eyes gor a split second before returning his gaze to the warriors.
Oh wow! I said in my head as I took in his appearance. He was dressed in a regalia, one that spoke highly of his title as the pack's Beta. I had slept off last night, and didn't hear him come in but I was very sure that the regalia was not the outfit on him when he shifted last night. My fear that the Beta was the prime suspect was luckily not confirmed. The Beta was saying something so I focused my attention on him.
"I heard the noise last night, the unmistakable sound of a wolf. I thought about stepping out, to scare the rogue Wolf away maybe but there was another. I could tell with the increment in the sound produced plus the other was a she-wolf. I was hoping desperately that you warriors would hear it, and come over. Now look at the mess they made." the Beta explained, and I forced myself to not cast him a look. Who knew Beta Maverick could actually lie, and do it so convincingly? If I didn't know better, I would have believed him myself.
But then, there is Alpha Demian, brutal, and merciless. The very thought of what he would do if he found out that the rogue Wolf was no other than his Beta sent shivers down my spine, and I was sure that thought was what made Beta Maverick a very convincing liar.
"The Alpha's quarters was..." the warrior who was speaking stopped abruptly, and faced me. "Leave us," he ordered, and I left, but not without swearing curses at him in my head of course.
I headed inside to my bedroom, but pressed my ears tightly against my locked window to eavesdrop on them. The warrior who had asked me to leave continued.
"Alpha Demian's quarters was also affected," he said and my eyes flung open in fear. Now the Alpha would become even more merciless. But the warrior was not done so I forced my attention back to him, and strained my ears as his voice was lower this time, almost inaudible.
"The Alpha's throne was destroyed, and the crown is now missing." The warrior added and I quickly left the window, suddenly not wanting to hear any more of it.
This is bad, I said in my head. This is so bad, I repeated. The Alpha's crown is missing, and his throne destroyed? But how?
I mean, Beta Maverick knew better than to tamper with the Alpha, trespass him. A thought came to my mind just then, and I didn't know whether to be relieved or not.
What if there was actually a second Wolf last night?
I looked quickly behind me when I suddenly felt a presence, and heaved a sigh when I saw that it was only the Beta. I didn't hear him come in. I was so lost in thoughts.
But the Beta was not smiling. Well, he never smiled but he wasn't just frowning now, he was in a rage, and I wondered why. My mind travelled from that very moment to last night, wondering what I might have done, and only two events made a little sense, standing close when he addressed the warriors, and my refusal to open the door when he pushed heavily at it last night. Either way, I could be in trouble, no, I was already in trouble. That angry look on his face wouldn't go away just like that. I knew him too well to think otherwise, and I knew better than to wish it would.
"What were you going to say to the warriors?" He asked, charging towards me with a slowness that caused the hairs on my skin to raise, and I moved backward with a single step. His question was confusing, I had no idea what he was talking about. The warriors only asked for him, and I was going to tell them that he was inside, but why is the Beta so concerned about the answer I gave or wanted to give to the warriors?
"You were going to tell them that I'm the rogue Wolf, weren't you?" The Beta asked, and I shot him a fearful look. If this was his accusation, then I am as good as dead. It didn't matter whether his accusation was true or not.
