Chapter 37 - Everything has it's price

Meanwhile, in the medical sector, Sunny entered the medical room and froze. In front of him stood none other than Morgan of Valer. Beautiful ascended with long dark hair and a cold but interested look in her bright crimson eyes. She was leaning against one of the tables that were specifically for doctors, on which was set a desktop as well as a badge with a name and neatly put paper documents. Most probably work-related. Morgan was wearing elegant black jeans with seemingly no visible pockets and a military-looking jacket mostly made from red material. She looked slightly lower and, with an arrogant look, asked Sunny.

"Why are you here?"

Sunny thought for a moment on what to say, but finally he shrugged and said.

"I was sent here to...meet someone."

"Yeah...right. Just leave while I am being nice."

Sunny smirked and said with slight humour in his voice

"You are joking, right…princess?"

"I am a representative of Valour. Do you know what that means?"

"That you are all bark and no bite like a good guard dog?"

"Are you trying to die?"

"You are a representative of clan Valer. You can't kill me."

"So you do want to die."

She pushed herself from the table and slowly removed one of her gloves made from dark brown leather, and said slowly while taking an arrogant stance of someone looking down at their opponent.

"Have you heard of my ability?"

"I did. So what."

She lunged at Sunny, aiming her bare palm right at his face, but Sunny caught her palm mid-attack and, with his left leg, tripped her so she would fall on her knee, but she jumped back, stretched her wrist, looking at it and back at him.

"...How are you…"

A smile appeared on her lips as she took a proper fighting stance.

"Guess I can fight you for real now."

"You can't."

Morgan stopped her movement as soon as she recognised the voice of the speaker.

"Master Jet."

"Lady Morgan. Why are you here at this hour?"

"Valour has a great interest in new potential members, you know how it is. I just found an excellent new member. I will be taking him with me."

"Are you not gonna ask for his acceptance?"

"Why should I? Becoming a member of the strongest legacy clan should be a privilege."

Jet sight and looked at Sunny.

"What do you think, Sunny? Do you want to follow Lady Morgan?"

"No. There is no reason for me to follow her."

Morgan wanted to say something, but she stopped herself and just asked.

"Why?"

"My goals and goals and goals of Valour are different, and so yeah. Also, stop asking so many questions."

"I don't follow your orders."

"I am well aware of that, but what about her's"

Sunny nodded towards Master Jet while saying the last bit.

Sunny looked at Jet, who just smiled at Morgan.

Morgan sighed and nodded, put her hand on Sunny's shoulder and said calmly.

"Fine. I will leave you be...for now. But don't think you can reject Valour forever, Awakened Sunless."

With that, she left.

"So Sunny. You beat master Rock, right? Here, take a seat."

"I did. Thank you."

He sat down while looking at Master Jet. She was still beautiful despite seeing herself as average or nothing special in her own eyes, but what Sunny liked the most was her battle art. It was brutal. Some could say it was soul-shattering... That probably sounded stupid.

"So what do we do now?"

"Now we will do the medical examination. What else?"

"I never imagined you as a doctor of any sort."

"Life is full of mysteries. Isn't it Sunny? Besides, I won't be doing the examination."

"It sure is. What do you mean by you are not the examiner?"

"Do I seriously need to say it? I am a fighter, not a doctor. I know how to kill. Just like you. I am here just as an escort in case some fresh Awaken will have...bad thoughts in his mind. You know what I mean."

"Yeah. So the examiner is a civilian."

"You are correct. Here she comes."

As she said that, a short female with a gentle smile and kind eyes entered the room wearing a full-on white uniform with her name clearly visible on her name badge located on her chest.

It just says Doctor H., maybe for anonymity or maybe for some other reason.

"Alright, young man. Take off your clothes. For starters."

"What? Why?"

"How else do you think medical examination is done? I can't see through solid objects, and as far as I know, the only person who knows how to do it is way too shy to use it."

"Kai."

"Yes. Awakened Kai. Actually, he was asked to help the masters with this, but he refused before they even tried to mention the reward. His loss. Besides, this is my job. So do as I say, young man."

"Y-Yes ma'am. Will a T-shirt be enough?"

"You can keep your underwear on."

Sunny sight and took off his T-shirt and trousers, revealing a massive Serpent tattoo coalescing across his entire body, mainly his back.

"Aren't you young for tattoos, young man?"

"Tattoo? I don't know what you mean."

He stretched, and the serpent moved, taking position on his ar,m coalescing around it.

"This is my weapon, aspect sort of. Oh, and I would recommend you not touch it."

Jet looked at him and outstretched her hand, only for it to get scratched by a cat that seemed to appear as if from nowhere on Sunny's shoulder.

The doctor just looked up and asked with a hint of confusion.

"Is that a cat?"

Jet looked at it and said slowly.

"Not a normal cat. It scratched me."

"It has to come off of you."

Sunny laughed and said.

"Yeah. Good luck with that."

Jet tried to grab Luna again, but Luna just dropped down into Sunny's shadow as if falling through the ground, only for her to appear back on top of his head again, with a sigh and rolled her eyes while stepping back after looking at Luna with mocking eyes toward Jet.

"Luna."

Sunny tilted his head slightly, and Luna jumped on top of the table, now watching 2 women witha cold look of someone taking something that belongs to her.

"This will do Awakened Sunless. Dress up."

The doctor was doing everything she said she would, ignoring the cat after the initial encounter and focused on what she was asked to do.

"On your way out, let others know that they can enter."

As she said that, she patted Luna on her head and looked back at Sunny, now dressed. Sunny bowed politely and exited the room, only to see everyone from his group already sitting on the chairs in the waiting room, but as he exited, instead of looking at him ,they were looking slightly above him.

"Oh. Luna."

She climbed down on his shoulder and stretched...well as much as it was possible, after which she slumped into his shadow and fell asleep...again.

Sunny meanwhile, started to walk away from them and waved while not looking at them.

"Have fun, guys...especially you, Kai."

Kai stood up and asked abruptly.

"W-What do you mean by that, Sunny?"

"It's a medical examination...I think you know exactly what I mean."

Kai paled slightly and started.

"You can't possibly mean..."

Sunny nodded and put his hand on his shoulder.

"It's not that big of a deal. Just a... never mind."

Sunny smiled at him and walked away from the hallway and headed for the startwell leading downwards.

After a while, he arrived at the cafeteria area and took his seat in the predetermined seat for the awakened as well as the Masters. Although he enjoyed cooking his own food, like the saying goes: 'When they are giving you, you should take...'

"That's how it goes...right? Well, whatever. Time to eat some free food."

The next 15 minutes, he spent eating his fill and trying different kinds of meals. He started with soup, followed it with a meaty main course and finished it with a dessert.

"Man, I am full...I guess I will take a nap...somewhere."

With that, he stood up and made his way out of the cafeteria to the relaxation area, in which there was one sofa, a small coffee table and 2 armchairs all made from some very comfortable light material. With that, he flopped down on it lying down.

"I need my eyes open...so I don't draw too much attention, but this sofa is so...comfo..."

He yawned while saying the last word and slowly closed his eyes while crossing his arms and legs comfortably.

He woke up sometime, but something was off.

"You up?"

Nephis was looking down at him cause after she found him, she tried to make him sleep on her lap, but Luna thought otherwise.

"Yeah. I am up. What about you? Did anything happen in the time we didn't see each other?"

Nephis smiled coldly and was still looking at Sunny.

"Is there something you want to tell me?"

"I don't think I understand. No. Not right now."

"What about Master Jet?"

"Now that you mention it. Thank you for reminding me. Do you know where she is now?"

"So that's what you're concerned about?"

"Yes, I have something I'd like to discuss with her, so yeah."

"No, I don't know. I went in second and waited for others. After that, we headed for a second period… While we are at it, where were you all this time?"

"Second period? What do you mean?"

Nephis blinked and sighed while touching her temples in disbelief.

"So you thought all that was it for the classes?"

"I mean, yeah. What else do I need? I mean, I don't really need anything they are teaching anyway. I am never gonna use it. Their teaching could be valuable for some legacy morons, but I doubt anyone from Forgotten Shore needs all this crap they are spouting during the class."

"You are missing the point, Sunny."

"Am I? Do tell what I am missing."

"Do you know about how nightmare spell gates are progressing?"

"Way more than any of them combined. Here is a counter question."

Sunny sat up and started asking his questions while stretching and cracking his neck.

"Do they teach about how to make memories? Or what lineages are there? Which are…how do I say this…legal? I really don't know how to describe it. Or how to deal with gates opening? I don't care about political situations or how many people die daily. I care about people, I love others, and I can do whatever they want. I don't care."

"That's not good, but I understand you think this is not essential information for you. So is this your goal? To keep your loved ones safe? What if someone objected to your goal?"

Sunny looked up at Nephis while crossing his fingers and said, looking blankly ahead of himself.

"I'd cut them down. Obviously, but it's not my only goal, as for what it is, I can't tell you yet, so don't ask me about it. Please."

"Will it go against my goal of destroying the nightmare spell?"

"Who knows. Only time will tell."

"That's not an answer. Will it…"

Sunny looked at her coldly and said.

"It's the only answer I will give you, and if you ask again, I will refuse to answer. I don't mind dividing that soul-shattering pain between my shadows to counter my flaw if I have to."

With that Sunny looked away from Nephis and looked behind her, spotting Kai and Mia walking towards them. Sunny smirked slightly and waved at Kai.

"So, Kai. Did you enjoy your medical examination?"

"Shut up, Sunny."

Sunny stood up and put his hands into his pockets, facing Kai.

"Oh my. Aren't you a shy one?"

"What about you? Did you enjoy it?"

"That backfired. I guess a little."

"Oh, did you really?"

Sunny faced Nephis while scratching the back of his head. As he did that, an announcement was sounded ending the school for today.

"Oh, look at that. Right. I'd love to chat with you more, Neph, but I really have to go now. Later."

With that, he waved and disappeared into his own shadow, disappearing right from their sight as if he wasn't there at all.

Nephis smirked slightly and said.

"Oh, Sunny. You will have to come home eventually, and when you do, we will have a....talk. Also Kai. Is there something you want to tell me?"

Kai picked up his phone and dialled the first number.

["Oh...really? Alright. Be right there."]

Kai hung up and turned on his heel, facing away from Nephis and said.

"Sorry, Nephis, I have to go. You know how busy my schedule is, right?"

Nephis stood up and walked to Kai, but froze.

"Stop."

"You can't be serious, Kai."

Kai chuckled and waved them while smiling innocently at still frozen Nephis.

Mia looked around and laughed while lying down on the sofa where Sunny had previously been, and looked at Nephis with amusement.

"Look at that, Lady Changing Star, unable to break a smile, mind hex by her teammate no less."

Nephis snickered and faced Mia with cold indifference.

"What about you. Won't you? Don't you want to tell me something?"

"Nephis, others might be afraid of you, but..."

She stood up and walked up to her, facing him, matching her cold gaze.

"I am not one of them. If you want something, you will have to beat it out of me."

"Is that a challenge?"

"That's up to you...Lady Nephis."

Nephis summoned her blade, but Mia lifted her hands and smiled.

"You do know that this is against the rules, right? Brandishing a weapon inside the unrestricted area. With that, I win by default even if I were to lose."

"In that case, I am challenging you formally."

Mia looked at her and smiled.

"I pass."

With that, she put her hands behind her back and started to walk away from her.

Nephis dismissed her weapon and looked after Mia.

"What do you mean?"

"From how it stands, only you can gain something. I won't gain anything. So unless I am getting something in return, I am not doing it."

"Alright, deal. In that case, if I win, I want to ask you 3 questions and you have to answer them honestly with Kai present, you can ask for anything you want."

Mia slowly faced Nephis, and her look betrayed wasteful emptiness.

"If I win. You will break up with Sunny."
