Chapter 6 - Accepted

The aroma of his mother's apple pie still lingered in the air, a comforting sweetness that usually soothed Elias. Tonight, however, it did little to calm the fluttering anxiety in his chest. Dinner had been a blur of polite conversation and forced smiles, his mind a million miles away.

He retreated to the sanctuary of a hot shower, the cascading water washing away the remnants of the day, but not the incessant thoughts circling in his head. Afterwards, clad in simple white shirt and comfortable half-pants, Elias sank into the plush sofa, the familiar cushions failing to provide the comfort he craved. He picked up his phone, the cool metal a small, tangible anchor in the swirling sea of his emotions.

Elias had succumbed to the modern-day siren song of social media, spending an embarrassing amount of time scrolling through Instagram. He wasn't particularly active, more of a lurker, absorbing the curated realities of others. And for the past few weeks, his focus had been laser-locked on one profile: @FloraBloom.

Flora. Just the name whispered in his mind conjured images of sunshine and laughter. He knew it was bordering on obsessive, this fascination. Her photos were a carefully constructed mosaic of her life – exotic travel destinations, delicious-looking food, witty captions, and always, that radiant smile. He knew very little of the real Flora, but the carefully crafted online persona had captivated him.

He'd been too intimidated to approach her then, but he'd found her Instagram profile later that night, a digital lifeline to the girl who'd become his silent obsession.

He'd hesitated for weeks before finally summoning the courage to send a follow request. He knew it was a long shot. She had thousands of followers. He was just another face in the digital crowd. He'd braced himself for rejection, for the silence of the algorithm, for the confirmation of his own insignificance.

He had just absentmindedly clicked on a new post when his phone buzzed, startling him. He glanced down. An Instagram notification. From Flora Bloom. She had accepted his request.

His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drummer lost in a chaotic rhythm. He stared at the notification, disbelieving. It was a simple action, a click of a button, yet it felt like a seismic shift in his universe. The world tilted on its axis.

That night, sleep eluded him. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Flora's face, her smile magnified, her eyes sparkling with an imagined interest. He tossed and turned, his mind a battlefield of hope and anxiety. He replayed the Instagram interaction a thousand times, dissecting every word, every emoji, searching for hidden meaning. He was a man adrift, anchored only by the fragile thread of a social media connection.
