"Sophie, you should take this back," Old Mr. Seymour said. Sophie only then noticed the box at his feet, with "Miss" carefully placed inside.
Sophie burst out laughing, "This is a birthday gift for you. Why are you 'returning' it? I must inform you that there are no returns or exchanges on goods sold here."
"You child," Old Mr. Seymour was amused by Sophie's playful remark but insisted, "This item is too valuable. Take it back quickly. I understand your good intentions, but this is unnecessary."
"That won't do," Sophie raised her head haughtily, "This is my respect for you. If you don't accept it..."
As she spoke, Sophie suddenly sniffled a couple of times and looked pitifully at Old Mr. Seymour, her voice carrying a faint sob, "Is it because you don't approve of me being with Charles?"
"Oh, what nonsense are you talking?" Old Mr. Seymour got worried at once. Where could he find such a wonderful granddaughter-in-law?
"The wedding is already set, how can I go back on it?"
