Maybe because they'd completely given up on Lu Yang, Manchester United then spent 22 million euros to bring goalkeeper Areola over from San Remo.
Total spending: 130 million euros!
This was their most heavily invested transfer window in recent years.
Manchester United's goalkeepers aren't bad, but they're getting old; they need an excellent successor.
Areola has pretty much been the most outstanding young goalkeeper in the past few years.
This 22 million euros price tag is purely because goalkeepers just don't sell for big money at this stage.
If San Remo could've held on to Areola for more than five years, his value wouldn't be less than 60 million!
Of course, there's no way San Remo could've kept their grip on Areola that long, and Areola himself wouldn't be willing either.
This summer window, San Remo's stance was simple: sell!
Most of San Remo's players also want to leave.
So the club and the players reached a special kind of tacit understanding.
