"It's a horror movie, idiot! Scared me to death!"

The Sundance Film Festival finally started; the 'festival' in a film festival essentially means films are being showcased.

Unlike the Oscars, which is actually just an award ceremony, they don't showcase films.

So, for films to be eligible for the Oscars, they must have been able to screen in theaters for over a week in the previous year.

The Oscars are just about the awards, so a week of screening means it's been shown.

However, film festivals like this are different; many of the films are actually new... of course, this requirement is not compulsory.

You could say the European film giants are a bit proud, preferring many films to be new releases.

Meaning they haven't been shown before, no one on this planet has seen them, and they should preferably be by a big director.
