Chapter 44 - Trouble in Heels

Ray's POV

It was just a banana, okay?

One stupid banana because I was late, and Seb was being all… Seb. Shirtless. Half-asleep. Smirking like a sin.

So naturally, I forgot breakfast. Again.

I was halfway through the law building, trying to balance my giant tote bag, Kai's psycho-level coffee order, my own caramel latte and two casebooks—when life, in typical Ray fashion, decided to humble me.

Smack.

My books hit the floor. My drink followed. And I—

"I'm so sorry!" I gasped, scrambling to pick things up. "I wasn't—oh my god, your shoes—did I spill—? Are you okay?"

I looked up.

Tall. Armani suit. Sculpted jawline. Classic Oxford accent. And the frowniest frown I'd ever seen in my life.

Great. I just assaulted a Greek god in designer leather.

He raised a brow. "You always attack strangers before your 9 a.m.?"

Before I could answer, a shadow loomed behind me.

"Kai—"

Too late.

"Back up," Kai said sharply, stepping in front of me like I was five seconds away from being kidnapped. "Name. Department. ID. Now."

"Excuse me?" Armani guy blinked.

Kai did not blink. "You made her drop things."

"I made her—?"

"She's got a bad wrist," Kai lied. I do not have a bad wrist. "And trauma. Back. Up."

Oh my God.

"Kai!" I hissed, tugging his sleeve. "He's just a student!"

"He's towering over you."

"So are you!"

Kai didn't budge. "Seb said no threats within five feet."

"He's a law student, not a mafia hitman—"

The guy looked between us, completely baffled. "Is this a prank?"

"Kai." I turned to him with the most serious glare I could muster. "Calm. Down. Now."

Pause.

Kai exhaled, flexed his fingers like he was physically restraining himself, and muttered, "Fine. But I'm watching him."

He walked away but stood just a few feet off. Arms crossed. Death-staring Armani Guy like he'd just declared war.

The guy crouched to help me with my books. "He always like this?"

"Only on Mondays," I sighed, cheeks burning. "Sorry. Overprotective best friend slash part-time assassin."

He chuckled. "I'm Nate. Nate Rutherford. I teach Business Law 201."

Oh no.

"Oh my God," I whispered. "You're my professor?"

"Don't worry," he grinned, handing me my notes, "I've already forgotten everything. Except the banana part. That was gold."

I wanted the ground to open and swallow me whole.

And somewhere across the campus, I knew Kai was calling Seb.

Great.

I tripped into a professor. My bodyguard's reporting it to my mafia sugar daddy. And I haven't even had breakfast.

Kill. Me. Now.
