### **CHAPTER 4: LOVE, DEATH, AND STOLEN STARSTUFF**

**Derelict Station *Kryostasi* | Kessel Orbit**

Ryn Tal'Kora grinned like a supernova, her shard-grafted arm sparking with unstable energy. "Surprise, pretty boy. Heard you missed me."

Kael's brain short-circuited. Ten years ago, he'd held her charred flight suit in the Kessel ash wastes. *Dead*. She'd been *dead*. But here she stood, smelling of ozone and betrayal, her shard humming in sync with his.

"You're a *ghost*," he growled, finger twitching over his blaster.

"Ghosts don't eat," Ryn said, tossing him a protein bar stamped **VOID MAW CORP**. "Also, they don't send threatening holograms. That was me. *Dramatic*, right?"

"Why?"

"Because you're still a terrible listener. I told you to *stay away*." She kicked the containment field holding the third shard. It flickered. "This isn't yours. The Keeper's watching. He'll peel your sister apart like a—"

Kael lunged. Their shards *clashed*, unleashing a shockwave that shattered the station's windows. Stars screamed into the vacuum as the room depressurized.

Ryn laughed, her shard forming a crackling shield. "Still fight dirty, Veythos? Cute."

"What's the Keeper's play?" Kael shouted over the roaring air.

"Same as yours! *Greed.* He wants the Maw to eat reality so he can rebuild it—with himself as god-emperor. Edgy, huh?" She kicked him in the ribs. "But you? You're just a thief chasing shiny rocks to save a sister who's *already dead*."

Kael's shard flared. Golden light wrapped Ryn's throat, slamming her into a wall. "Say that again."

She gagged, still grinning. "Check her arm lately? The corruption's in her *bones*. You're too late. But hey—team up with me, and I'll show you how to *profit* from the apocalypse!"

Z-9's voice crackled over Kael's comm. **"VEYRA COLLAPSED. CORRUPTION AT 78%. ALSO, THE SHIP'S ON FIRE. PLEASE YELL AT ME."**

Kael hesitated. Ryn saw it—the old weakness. She lunged, biting his wrist until he dropped her. "*Pathetic.* You haven't changed. Still choosing *her* over everyone."

"You died!" Kael roared.

"*You left me to!*" Ryn's smirk finally cracked. "Kessel wasn't an accident, Kael. The cult bombed our outpost to steal the Starbinder archives. You ran. I *burned*. The Keeper found me. Gave me this." She raised her shard-arm, its light now sickly green. "Turns out, resurrection's a pyramid scheme."

A proximity alarm blared. The cult warship from Astra Prime descended, its hull carving through the station like a chainsaw.

**"Ryn Tal'Kora,"** boomed the Keeper's voice. **"You defy your debt."**

"Oops. Daddy's home," Ryn muttered. "Last chance. Run, or get rich trying?"

Kael grabbed the third shard. "I'm done running."

---

**Flashback | Kessel | The "Incident"**

*Ten years earlier…*

Smoke choked the mining outpost. Kael, 19 and trembling, dragged a wounded Ryn through rubble.

"Leave me!" she coughed, her leg bent wrong. "The shard's in vault seven—get it to the Starbinders!"

"Shut up!" Kael snapped. Above, cult ships fired.

Ryn kissed him, bitter and desperate. "*Go.* I'll hold them off."

He ran.

He always ran.

---

**Present | Station Implosion**

The cult warship's beam vaporized entire decks. Kael sprinted, Ryn at his heels, both dodging debris.

"You kept the shard?" Ryn yelled. "Even after I *died*?"

"Sold it for fuel money!"

"*Classic.*"

They reached the *Cypher*, now half-melted. Veyra lay convulsing in the cargo hold, her corruption spreading like ink. Z-9 frantically jabbed her with stims.

"Took you… long enough," Veyra rasped.

Ryn whistled. "Yikes. She's *fuuucked*."

Kael pointed his shard at her. "Fix her."

"Can't. But *he* can." Ryn nodded at the warship. "The Keeper's got a shard *factory* in there. Refined void energy. Could buy her a week."

"Trap?"

"Oh, 100%. But you love those!"

The *Cypher* shuddered as the warship's tractor beam locked on.

Veyra grabbed Kael's arm. "Don't… trust her…"

"Don't have to," he said, fusing the third shard to his own. Power *surged*, burning his veins. "Just follow the *money*."

---

**Aboard the Warship | The Keeper's Lair**

The factory was a cathedral of suffering. Cultists churned shard fragments in magma vats, their screams harmonizing with machinery. At the center floated the Keeper—a skeletal figure in gilded robes, his face hidden behind a shard-forged mask.

**"Kael Veythos,"** the Keeper hissed. **"You bring me gifts."**

Ryn bowed, sarcastic. "Hey boss. Brought a snack."

Kael ignited his shard-blade. "Where's the void energy?"

**"First,"** the Keeper said, **"a reunion."**

He snapped his fingers. A cage descended, holding a hunched figure—*Master Orin*, alive but broken, his eyes hollow.

"Miss me, kids?" Orin croaked.

Veyra gasped. "You… traitor!"

**"He gifted you to the Maw,"** the Keeper said. **"Now, let's finish it."**

Ryn sighed. "Told you this was a trap."

"Yep," Kael said. "*Plan time.*"

He threw the *Cypher*'s hyperfuel canister into a magma vat.
