Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Breakdown

She opened the door to her tiny apartment with a trembling hand, slamming it shut behind her as if trying to shut out the entire outside world.

She leaned against it for a moment, her breath shallow and rapid, her body still shaking from within.

Slowly, she took off her shoes and walked with heavy steps toward a small table beside the kitchen, where the envelope still lay...

The envelope of money.

Dirty money.

Money given to her after something far greater than her dignity was taken.

But she had no choice... the rent was overdue, and the landlord had threatened eviction just last week.

She picked up the envelope as if carrying the weight of the whole world—and left.

---

At the Landlord's Door

She knocked on the old wooden door. It opened quickly, as if he'd been expecting her.

A fat man appeared in the doorway, with greasy hair sticking to his chest and small eyes filled with something hidden… something vile.

He looked her up and down slowly, then said in a rough voice:

"Finally… I thought you'd run off."

She didn't respond. She simply extended her hand and offered him the envelope.

He took it—but that wasn't enough for him.

He stepped closer… too close, and muttered:

"Payment's late. But just for you… I'll let it slide. Especially if…"

His eyes stopped at the opening of her collar, then moved lower.

She recoiled.

Took a step back immediately and cut him off coldly:

"The money's all there. Spare me your talk."

He chuckled—a low, chilling laugh that made her skin crawl.

As he slowly closed the door, he said:

"See you next month… beautiful."

The door shut.

But the echo of his words lingered in her ears.

She returned to her apartment, locked the door behind her, then turned the key once… twice… three… four times.

And collapsed.

She sank to the floor, hugging herself as if trying to hold together the shattered pieces.

She wasn't crying out loud. Just silence—and heavy tears.

She just wanted to disappear.
