Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Yearning and Agreement

Kael decided it was time to act. The insights he had gained about desire were too valuable to ignore, and his goal of persuading Elira to embrace magic seemed within reach. He found her in the estate's library, surrounded by books and half-finished artifacts. Her brow was furrowed in concentration as she scribbled notes onto a piece of parchment.

"Elira," Kael began, his tone calm but deliberate. "I want you to learn magic. With me."

Elira froze, her quill hovering mid-air. She turned to face him, her crimson eyes wide with surprise. Before she could respond, a sharp sound echoed through the room—her hand had connected with his cheek, leaving a red mark. Kael staggered back, stunned not by the pain but by her reaction.

"What was that for?" he asked, genuinely confused.

Elira's face flushed bright red, her embarrassment only deepening as she realized what she had done. "Don't say things like that so casually!" she snapped, though her voice wavered slightly. "You can't just... propose something like that out of nowhere!"

Unbeknownst to them, Lady Serena Valmere listened from afar, using her magic to eavesdrop on their conversation. Her lips curved into a faint smile at Elira's reaction, intrigued by the unexpected turn of events.

As Kael rubbed his stinging cheek, he noticed something—a flicker of desire in Elira's heart, one he hadn't anticipated. It wasn't simply a yearning to learn magic; it was deeper, more personal. A desire to share that journey with someone. But who? The realization hit him suddenly, and his breath hitched. Could it be... him?

By morning, Elira confronted her mother in the study, her expression conflicted but resolute. "I've decided to learn magic," she announced, though her tone carried an edge of reluctance. "But I won't abandon artifacts. I want to pursue both."

Serena studied her daughter carefully, her sharp gaze softening ever so slightly. After a long pause, she nodded. "Very well," she said evenly. "Balance is rare, but not impossible. If you succeed, you may become one of the few supreme mages capable of excelling in multiple disciplines."

Elira exhaled sharply, relief washing over her. "Thank you," she murmured, though her gratitude was tempered by determination. This was her choice—not her mother's—and she intended to prove herself on her own terms.

Meanwhile, Kael ventured into the outskirts of town to test the limits of his newfound ability. He chose a quiet marketplace where townsfolk bustled about, oblivious to his presence. Focusing on a baker, he planted a seed of desire—a craving for recognition—and amplified it until the man began offering free samples to anyone who passed by. The effect was immediate, drawing crowds and sparking lively chatter.

Satisfied with the results, Kael slipped away, his mind racing with possibilities. Desire was a powerful force, one he could wield with precision. Yet even as he reveled in his progress, unease lingered. The whispers of the void pressed against him, reminding him of the cost of such power.

Later that evening, as Kael wandered through the dimly lit streets of Arathis, he overheard murmurs among the townspeople. They spoke in hushed tones about a corrupted Seeker—one rumored to dabble in forbidden knowledge and black magic. The description was vague, but the implications were clear: whoever this person was, they inspired fear and suspicion.

Kael's pulse quickened. While he knew the rumors weren't directly tied to him, they served as a warning. His nighttime excursions, once a source of freedom, now posed a risk. If anyone discovered his connection to the strange occurrences plaguing the area, he would find himself hunted.

From now on, he resolved to tread carefully. The shadows welcomed him, but they also concealed dangers he couldn't yet foresee. For now, discretion would be key.
