Chapter 18 - The Counter VS The Striker

"Ulysses Morris has moved on!"

Tedros went through the rooftops of Ritzrub, looking for both crime and anyone tied up there. He was lacking in both, but with now loud the centre of Ritzrub always is at night, it made sense he couldn't hear any individuals. Or see from a set of extremely high-rise studio apartments. Looking back, he probably should have brought binoculars or something. He briefly inspected his new outfit in the mirror. An old neon blue wrestling mask he found amongst a pile of his old stuff, combined with a scarf of the same colour he found from Desta's room. And a standard dark green hoodie, because he didn't have a neon blue one. But as he continued to go over the apartments, he noticed someone tied up just outside one of them. He looked around, and nobody else was even here. So he untied the young woman himself, who then proceeded to thank him on the verge of tears.

He removed the scarf from his mouth, giving a hearty smile and an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

"Just another problem solved by the comeback! Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be going!"

"Sorry, how do I leave?"

Tedros went the way he came with the girl on his back, leaping over the rooftops.

"You get used to it." He said casually. He wasn't used to it. The fear of falling was always there, but he had to push on regardless. As he slid down the pipe he initially scaled to get up there with the girl in tow, he hoped the combined weight wouldn't just cause it to break.

"And Tedros moves on!" The voice yelled as they hit the ground and the girl ran off. "Only one person left, so it's between Desta and Evelyn! Both in Ritzrub, the right place to be!"

Tedros heart sank slightly as he heard Desta was still in the running. Knowing her, she was probably frantically looking around for anything. If she isn't a hundred percent on top of something, she panics. So it was up to him to help.

Desta ran around the Ritzrub streets. She frantically checked every single building, sometimes getting chased out after she tried jumping over the back. But she was in the right place, that she knew. So she quickly eyed the buildings, thinking about the last place to expect a body would be. The obvious thing in Ritzrub were the lights, so look for the least illuminated thing in this part of the city.

Her eyes eased up when she saw the car park. Tall, and purely grey concrete. Three stories, so surely somebody has to be in there. She began running towards it, keeping an eye on this Evelyn person. She had no idea who she even was! All she could do was run.

Evelyn ran around the car park. She had every storey checked, and found neither a tied up person nor anyone looking at someone tied up, so this clearly wasn't the place to be. A few people looked at her with concern, possibly as she definitely had crazy eyes and was holding a baseball bat. Look, it was pretty much the only weapon she had on her. As she ran, another girl ran past her. A girl with deep black skin and a stylish pair of glasses, along with a neon blue scarf.

That was Desta. She knew that was Tedros brother, and nothing else. Not like she knew anything about Tedros. But she knew two options lay in front. Either let Desta go, and deal with the fifty percent chance of dying, or knock her out now, securing her place in the next round.

Desta barely avoided the swing of the bat. She looked at the girl in front of her, going in for another swing. A girl with a pink pixie cut that was pretty unkempt, alongside a green tweed jacket for some reason. She was holding up a battered baseball bat to her frenzied eyes, a brief second before the second swing attempt. Desta jumped back, quickly grabbing the bat in the brief moment before she could swing it again. The bat began to crumble in her hand, and Evelyn quickly pulled it away from her. The top half was gone, spreading around the park as ash. Evelyn began to look even more frazzled as she went in for a second hit.

As Tedros made his way through the crowds, he heard yelling from his right. On the right was the car park, and the voice was Desta's scream. He'd know it anywhere, so he dashed through in order to get to her. The battle was right in front of the car park, with a crazed Evelyn trying to hit her with a bat. Tedros rushed in, ducking between the two of them and pushing his right hand upwards, stopping the impact on Desta's head. His wrist hurt like hell, but that didn't matter, he was left handed. That left hand moved to the wall alongside the rest of his body, where he tapped two circles at the highest point he could muster, with a final seal at the bottom.

The spiked pillar burst between the two of them. Desta stepped back, but Evelyn slid under the gap without a second of hesitation, sweeping her leg when she got to the other side and tripping Desta, leaping back upwards.

She felt Tedros eyes fix onto her as she recovered, bashing Desta's head with what was left of the bat. The sound of the impact reverberated through the car park, and Desta finally dropped. She looked to still be breathing, and the relief that Evelyn herself didn't kill her provided was a brief moment of serenity.

Tedros gave chase, and Evelyn ran, looking around the car park to see if anything could hide a body. Tedros was catching up, jumping forward and landing a kick to her back, forcing her to the ground. He also fell on his back, so she got up and continued forward. Tedros kept running, seeing Evelyn by the walls, next to a men's bathroom. With nowhere else to go, she rolled away from Tedros punch inside.

When she entered, a noise was let out from behind one of the stalls. She tried opening the stall the noise was behind, but it was locked. Tedros entered, and she quickly climbed over the neighbouring stall to the one with the noise, and there was a man tied up on the toilet, screaming and looking like he was about to faint. She quickly untied him as she heard Tedros try to bash the door down.

"And Evelyn is our final winner!"

The voice rang out through Tedros ears, and he had to hold onto a sink to make sure he wouldn't fall to the ground. He bolted out of the room to see a figure looming over Desta.

"I'm sorry this had to happen." The figure said. Deep black skin with a spear in his hand, which he plunged straight through the heart of the unconscious Desta. The man didn't react to Tedros scream, as he fell to his knees and looked at Desta's dead body. It was at least a clean kill. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw Evelyn escape.

"If you don't mind me asking." The man asked. "How do you feel about her?"

Tedros took a moment to respond. He had to blink a few times, powering himself back up before getting the energy to talk again.

"Nothing. She was just playing the game. Same as I was."

"I see." The man nodded. "That's a more mature response then I expected from you."

"Grudges are not the way of the counter." He muttered through glassy eyes. "There's enough things like that in the world, and my goal is not to add to it."

Tedros finally stood up as the police arrived. He glanced back at the host as the fire returned to his eyes.

"My goal is to stand up against anything that could be considered injustice. And defeating you will be the ultimate proof I can succeed at that."
