Chapter 4 - The Xanders Siblings

After the library, Brandr came to me, and the other two as well. He ended up giving us a file containing information about the Xanders siblings, as well as details about where we would be staying when we were in the States. Looking over the file now, there was nothing left out based on the information. Medical history, results from doctors' trips, schools they went to, family vacations, and more.

Both of them were adopted from the same orphanage at the same time. The couple that initially came to adopt Collin ended up adopting Kara as well, due to their stubbornness in not wanting to leave each other.

Collin and Kara's first interaction was in a foster home. The foster parents, having too many foster children, ended up only giving them the bare necessities to survive. And they ended up sticking together ever since.

Collin Xanders, a college history professor, martial arts blackbelt in taekwondo, silver medalist in the most recent competition, 188 centimeters tall, graduate top of his class in history and English literature. No inherited condition or diseases, finished university early, got multiple university requests for him to teach at, but ultimately decided to teach at the one he graduated from, and has been there ever since.

Kara Xanders, adoptive sister of Collin, is currently a fourth year in her second degree at the university her brother teaches at, her first degree being history and the second one in criminal psychology. She also does martial arts like her brother and is an intern at their local police department, 179 centimeters tall. She has ADHD, but other than that, there are no other conditions. She probably developed some habits from the department, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Even though they're adopted siblings, if you don't know them, most people would think that they are biologically related based on their looks. Black hair and green eyes. Their facial features also look similar.

Both love history and have investigated Viata according to the file. They live in New York City, downtown, both live in the apartment they lived in with their parents before they died. Despite being adoptive siblings, they're both Korean American based on their ancestry test, but have lived in the States for their whole lives.

There was a knock on the door before Kei entered, holding a file similar to mine. He was still looking over it when he entered and sat beside me.

"Whoever made this file really put the effort into it, huh. Like, I mean,n everything that's happened since the moment they were born is here. Friends, colleagues, classmates, favorite spots to stay at, crazy." Kei observed, "Not gonna lie, this is useful, like the favorite spots and shit, but isn't this a bit overkill?" It was hard to disagree with what he said. The information is thorough. Too thorough for this not to be a major mission. Especially with what Brandr said about them joining us.

I'll write in the file later, for now, I'll just make sure I have everything... And I should probably write my will, too.

The lecture was coming to an end. Most students we still in their seats taking notes of the last topic we discussed, some were getting ready to pack up their stuff, as they had already finished everything they needed to do. At the front of the lecture hall stood their history professor, who was finishing up the lecture.

"That's it for today's lecture, everyone. If you have any questions on the research or need help, just come to me during office hours or email me. Have a good day, everyone," he said. Once it was said, most students started to slowly file out of the hall as they finished their work. Some chose to stay behind to ask questions about the World Wars, others to ask for an explanation on the Tudors as he started packing his stuff. After a while, all the questions were answered, and the remaining students left as well.

Collin, having just finished his last lecture for the day, started to walk out of the lecture hall, going to his office to finish grading the essays he had previously assigned. He let his thoughts wander, after a while, then began grading once again. Not many students come by during office hours; most days, no one comes at all, not even other professors. Today was one of those days. He let his thoughts wander more than usual. Going back to Viata.

Viata... Not many people know about it. It might be for the better. Limited research, and everyone who has ever published an article on it is dead, and most articles have disappeared or just aren't useful enough. Some of the older books have mentions of a lost nation. They might be referring to Atlantis, there's more evidence on that than Viata. Just my luck, hopefully Kara's doing better than I am researching Viata. Hopefully.

With everything that needed to be done, done, he started to get ready to go meet Kara at the Book Cafe.

The conference room was filled with people from different departments. Interns, detectives, and other officers. We were called for a briefing regarding new transfers from overseas. Two officers were joining the department. The chief said that they were experienced, but he also said that they would need time to adjust to the new working environment.

"Interns, you're dismissed, your shifts are over, the rest of you stay here, there's something else I need to go over with you before you leave," Chief said, and with that, we were kicked out of the meeting room again since we're not fully employed here.

The rest of the interns and I started to walk out of the conference room. It was always like this with the more dangerous tasks being handed out. Well, it was a given, as most interns are reckless. We were no exception. But... Collin's going to be pissed if I do that, so I'll stick to playing it safe. Walking towards the front desk, someone spoke up.

"Doesn't it piss you off? They don't treat us like we're worth anything because we're interns here!" Lucas stated, gesturing wildly. Lucas was always a pain when this happened. Ranting about how they don't treat us interns fairly. At this point, there's no use in arguing with him.

The meeting room isn't that far from the entrance and the front desk, so it doesn't take that long to get there. Sara is always there, working at the front desk, when our shifts start and end, she always greets us and tries to cheer us up, specifically Lucas, after the Chief does this to us so it's no surprise when she greets us again, "So, Chief kicked you guys out again huh? You guys do know he only does that when there is something dangerous. Most interns tend to be reckless," she assured us with a smile

We all turned to look at Sara at the front desk, I looked at her with a smile. Being kicked out of the conference room was better than being scolded by Collin. Way better.

"You always say that," Kate replied. Kate was right, though. Sara would say some variation of that when this happens. It probably used to work to cheer other interns up, but it's starting to lose its effect.

"Come here," Sara gestured for us to come closer to the front desk, we all went as she's nice to us and we felt bad to turn her down, "I'm not supposed to say this to you but new officers are transferring from Asia. It's our secret ok," she told is in a hushed voice, with a finger over her lips. Then she shooed us away to get out of the station.

With that, we left the station for the day. As we were walking out, I began to wonder what these new people were like.

"I'm going to meet up with Collin in the Cafe, anyone want to come with?" I asked, turning to the others, and got a reply out of all of them agreed since they have nothing better to do. "Then let's go," I said with a smile.

There was a chime when the door opened. Looking around, Kara spotted him and sat there with the other interns. They asked Collin for his opinion about Macbeth, and they started ranting and expressing their opinions. This then spiraled into a debate, with Shakespearian insults and slurs being thrown around. It was always fun watching them debate stuff. But it's more fun when you get involved in it.
