Chapter 10 - Jealous of you

Spring came slowly, unfurling in soft greens and hopeful sunrises. The world seemed gentler somehow, as if it too had weathered something and survived.

Emma stood at the edge of the park, watching children chase bubbles near the fountain. Lily joined her minutes later, holding two coffees. They didn't speak at first. They didn't need to.

Everything that had once been sharp—jealousy, confusion, the pain of almost losing everything—had softened. And in its place was something more enduring: understanding.

"You seem lighter," Lily said, handing her a cup.

Emma sipped, then smiled. "I feel lighter. For the first time in years, I'm not chasing anyone else's idea of who I should be."

Lily bumped her shoulder gently. "I used to be jealous of you, you know."

Emma blinked. "What? Why?"

"You always seemed so sure of everything. Your relationship. Your career. Yourself." Lily looked ahead. "I felt like I was constantly catching up to you."

Emma laughed softly. "That's the cruel trick, isn't it? I was jealous of you. How easy you were with people. How natural things seemed around you—especially with Ethan."

They stood in silence again, the confession settling between them like dust in a sunbeam.

"I guess we were both chasing shadows," Emma said. "Versions of each other that weren't real."

"And maybe now," Lily said, "we're just… us."

Emma turned toward her, heart open, no longer trying to outrun the past or deny what she felt.

"So," she said, "what do you see when you look at me now?"

Lily grinned. "Someone who finally stopped hiding. And someone I'd really like to keep getting to know."

Emma didn't reply with words. She leaned in, slowly, carefully—and this time, Lily didn't hesitate. Their lips met in a kiss that wasn't urgent, but sure. Steady. Real.

It wasn't perfect. It wasn't a fairytale.

But it was theirs.

And as they stood beneath the soft blush of spring, two people who had once been broken by doubt began to write a new story—one not built on jealousy or fear, but on choice.
