Chapter 5 - A dance of information

The silver letter opener spun idly in Duke Cassian's fingers, catching the moonlight and sending pinpricks of light dancing across the rich tapestries of his study. His gaze was steady, probing, and utterly unreadable. He had laid his cards on the table, or at least, a significant portion of them. He knew I was "new," that I was tied to "anomalies," and that I possessed knowledge I shouldn't. Not like I asked for it!

My mind raced, weighing the risks. Deny? He clearly wouldn't believe me. Nah....Hint? That seemed to be my default, but he was pushing for more. Ask about Alaric? A good deflection, but might he see through it? Nah...Or… offer a quid pro quo? Information for protection. It was a bold move, one that could either forge an invaluable alliance or condemn me. Whatever, it sounds good to me.

His words echoed: "...you know things you shouldn't, Seraphine. Things about the Crown Prince, about the recent deaths, perhaps even about the Crown of Swords and Silk."

He was fishing. And I had the bait.

"Perhaps," I said, my voice carefully modulated, betraying none of the frantic calculations swirling beneath. I met his gaze, holding it. "And perhaps you know a great deal as well, Duke Cassian. Things about the true nature of power in this kingdom. About the shadows that linger even in the brightest palaces."

I took a deliberate step closer to his desk, my gaze sweeping from his face to the intricate map of ley lines on the wall. "Anomalies, you said. Disturbances. A stone dropped into a calm pond." I paused, letting the implication hang in the air. "It seems we both have pieces of a puzzle, Duke. Pieces that, alone, are merely curious. But together..."

My voice dropped to a near whisper, conspiratorial and challenging. "Together, they could reshape the very fabric of this world. Or at least, ensure our survival in it." I raised an eyebrow, a silent challenge. "What is your plan for this 'anomaly,' Duke? And more importantly, what is your plan for the 'Crown of Swords and Silk'?"

His eyes narrowed infinitesimally, and the silver letter opener stilled in his hand. A hint of genuine surprise, quickly masked, flickered in his expression. I had struck a nerve, hit on something he hadn't expected me to know. The "Crown of Swords and Silk" was more than just a novel to him; it was a blueprint, a prophecy, or perhaps even a cage.

"An intriguing proposition, Lady Seraphine," he said, his voice now laced with a new layer of interest, a predator assessing its prey, or perhaps, a valuable new asset. He leaned back in his chair, a slow smile spreading across his face. It wasn't the chilling, amused smile from before, but something sharper, more calculating. "You speak of reshaping worlds. A rather bold claim for a young woman who was, by all accounts, dead an hour ago."

He set the letter opener down with a soft click. "But then again, perhaps you are the missing piece. Tell me, then, Seraphine. What do you truly know about the Crown of Swords and Silk? And what, precisely, do you expect in return for this... 'illumination'?"
