Chapter 80 – A Desperate Action?

"Zz… Sir, it's not safe for you to be flying over the cities knowing we might encounter enemies."

Alan, who was mid-flight, responded: "Too late, I'll be fine, and if not, the others will know what to do."

"Zz… Understood."

Riya, who had come to Alan's side when she learned he was leaving the base, looked at him and asked, "Are you worried?"

"It's natural. Many think that because I'm important, my duty is to stay in safe places, but it shouldn't be that way. I'm different…" Alan was accompanied by his past mistakes, so he had to keep busy.

He, like everyone else, had to live with his mistakes for the rest of his life; there were no shortcuts to forget the pain, especially when every ounce of that feeling was caused by oneself.

Alan would never be behind the defense lines pretending to be a leader when he led nothing. Now that his plans were underway, there was no need to stay with them for those to be fulfilled, so he could go to that military base for now.

"Are you okay?" Alan looked at Riya, who seemed thoughtful.

Riya nodded, smiled slightly, and said, "Since we learned about the rebel groups, I think we need to be more careful when we go out."

"I don't think they're as worried about the living, knowing the infected are more dangerous," Alan said as he gave orders to depart for the military base.

The other soldiers remained silent; besides Riya and Alan, they were the two pilots.

There was one more soldier in the back, but there weren't many since they were just here to observe from above.

Soon, the helicopter left the forward base toward the area where it was speculated a military base was being attacked by infected.

But at that moment, the rear part of the helicopter exploded, causing the whole flight to shake violently, raising an alert that put everyone on edge.

"What's happening?" Alan asked immediately, feeling that something was wrong.

"It's the engine, sir. Helicopter maintenance has been delayed, and it seems we rushed this one!" The pilot was anxious; his eyes quickly scanned the surroundings to make a decision.

"Can we land in a safe place?" Riya looked to one side while fastening her seatbelt.

"Yes, that's exactly what I'll do. We'll descend slowly!"

Alan sighed nervously; today could be the day he died. He didn't regret having come this far; at least he had laid strong foundations for people to survive if they were smart.

Not knowing how far he could go, Alan had left a letter in a room where he stored valuable things that only Tobias knew about. Only one year later, that letter was supposed to fall into the hands of whoever would be the next leader—and that wouldn't be him.

But Alan wasn't so pessimistic; he wasn't dead yet, and those were only sudden thoughts in critical moments when he didn't know the outcome of his safety.

"I'm losing control!"

"Hold on!"

The surroundings seemed to be only forest; only then did Alan realize they were in serious trouble.

Being in a place like this meant being in the hands of the unknown, something that would put them at risks they couldn't prevent.

At that moment, seconds seemed to slow down before Alan's eyes. Everything he had done so far made him wonder if it was worth it. Were all these people really in danger because of him?

"Don't worry, I'll get you out of this!"

"Don't worry, boss, this is an exciting situation…"

"I'll get you out of here, guys, don't worry."

Looking at the smoke coming from the rear of the helicopter, Alan tightened his grip and breathed in the cold reality of the situation. Everyone was fearful of the outcome of this accident.

But at that moment, without anyone expecting it, the sound of breaking wind was heard, and a burst of blood splattered inside the helicopter.

Boom!

That kind of explosive shot went directly through the chest of one of the soldiers, killing him instantly, and blood mixed with bits of flesh flew out of the hole caused by the explosion.

The soldier's body shook slightly; he didn't have time to react to the death that hit him.

"How the hell are they attacking us?"

Suddenly, upon hearing gunfire behind them, everyone at the front unconsciously ducked their heads.

The person closest to the soldier who had just died turned his head to look at his fallen comrade and the bullets still entering the helicopter cabin, with eyes full of disbelief. He leaned against the wall and shouted loudly, "Take cover…!"

"Ah!!!"

The piercing screams made everyone in the helicopter tremble.

Alan, who was the closest, was also startled by the heart-wrenching scream and then slowly recovered his composure. Hearing the man's unstoppable cry, he felt he had to see where the shots were coming from.

"Damn it!!"

The death of another companion terrified everyone on the helicopter, and no one knew who shouted afterward. There were several soldiers, and many had already been hit by the enemy's bullet storm.

After all, the helicopter was flying very low. Anyone with an assault rifle could shoot them and kill them as a group of unknown people was doing.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Everyone, cover your heads!"

Alan didn't understand what was happening, so he made sure to protect Riya and wait for the thing to land to see who the idiot shooting at them was.

"I've lost control, sir!"

"Prepare for impact!"

Boom!

Before they knew it, the helicopter Alan and Riya were on crashed to the ground, shaking violently. Feeling as if the world had turned blurry, Alan looked to the sides, and his vision on the right side turned crimson.

"Are you FEDRA?"

At this precise moment, Alan's cold face and literally crimson eyes focused on his subtle weapon backpack. He could faintly hear the sounds of people nearby slowly approaching.

"I'm going to kill you all…"

Zz… This is Riya. Helicopter A-Q78 has crashed, and we are now surrounded by infected and hostile people. Commander Alan Williams is okay, but I can't say the same for the others…"

At that moment, Riya grabbed the nearest radio and sent a message to central base: "Zz… If you hear this message, send reinforcements as soon as possible once the commander contacts you…"

"Where are we, Riya?"

Riya, who had only suffered a few bumps on the head, looked around and said, "I can't see anything. There are just a few houses, and the rest seems to be wilderness."

"Let's get out of here. Tell the base we will report our position when the time is right." Alan gave himself first aid while watching the infected who had approached closer to the crash site.

Without a doubt, things had become even more dangerous for them.
