Chapter 5 - system secrets and a sucky training montage

Calvin now stood in a large open room, ornate wooden designs encompassing it in circular patterns. In front of him, Constantine made symbols in the center of the room, performing a sort of ritual as he drew a large pentagram with strange, red dust. When he was finished, Constantine stood off to the side, lighting up another cigarette. "Ok junior… the first step of demon hunting is something pretty simple… learn how a demon moves and reacts…" he took a long drag… "and try not to die, will you?" Without elaborating further, Constantine flicked the cigarette up, stepping behind a salt line as it twirled before landing on the red dust. The dust exploded in a cloud of fire and smoke, the smoke condensing to form a faintly humanoid shape as something blared in Calvin's head.

{Warning! Warning!: lvl 1 demonic threat detected! System advises host take caution due to his inexperienced state!}

Before Calvin could retort to the system's statement, he narrowly managed to duck a wide swing as the smoke finalized into a demon, thick, scaly red skin, with no nose and pale white eyes, claws that stretch up to three inches long. It snarled, charging Calvin as he did the only thing he could; run. He ducked and weaved strikes as best he could, before finally throwing a punch himself. His fist connected to the noseless creature, a sharp shriek being let loose as it staggered back slightly. Both Constantine and Calvin appeared surprised at this, but with no time to react Calvin continued to dodge. What the hell was that!? Calvin thought, he wasn't expecting a answer, but he got one.

{due to the SLAYER SYSTEM being from the doom franchise, the host is naturally effective against demonic entities. While currently unable to kill a demon with bare hands alone, host's attacks do more damage than normal to lesser level demons}

Calvin raised his eyebrows, now knowing that he could actually do something, he went fully on the offensive. He began to fight back, but it was sloppy, less coordinated strikes and much more aggressive and uncoordinated, yet powerful swinging. He landed several good hits, before getting struck himself, flung back over the salt line… That gave Calvin a idea as he quickly jumped back over and continued fighting, but as the demon shreiked, he took several steps back… and as the demon lunged, Calvin waited till the last second until he activated his [speed force] skill. Immediately, Calvin jumped out of the way as the demon smacked head first into the force field that was the salt barrier, stumbling back in a flash of blue light. Before the demon could regain its footing, Calvin was already upon him, realeasing lightning fast strikes. It wasn't anywhere near the level of normal speedster punches, but still like Calvin had secretly been a pro boxer his entire life, fists flying every second as he pelted the demon for 30 seconds straight. After 30 seconds, the effect wore off and Calvin was made aware of something he didn't know before.

{[speed force: lvl 1] is currently on cooldown for a full minute}

Calvin was disheartened but not devastated, it was good to know that his super speed had a limit. He wasted no time, jumping onto the back of the demon and locking it in a chokehold as it writhed and flailed, desperate to get him off. "Bloody good show mate… go ahead and end it." Calvin turned to see that Constantine had pulled something from his coat, he tossed it and Calvin caught it mid air, looking up at it in his hand as a Christian would look up at the gaze of god. Calvin now held Constantine's holy shotgun within his grasp, assembled from holy relics and bullets of gold encased in 12-gauge shells, it was immaculate. Calvin slammed it against the demon's head, smacking it around with the barrel a few times before blowing half its face off. The demon shrieked in agony, finally bucking Calvin off as it flailed and twitched, its wounded face smoking and bubbling due to the ammo's holy nature. Calvin watched as it turned to him with hatred in its eyes, bolting forward as fast as it could as he took aim and fired, blowing the demon's head off fully as it's corpse landed on top of him. "EW! I THINK SOME OF IT GOT IN MY MOUTH! *puh!* *puh!*"

Calvin desperately spat out non-existent demon bits, disgusted at the thought while Constantine simply laughed. He helped Calvin up only to freeze as he stared at the demon's body, Calvin following his gaze to see the demons skin begin to glow red as a familliar symbol was actively burned across the demon's body. Calvin stared much more intently however, as he recognized it… the slayer's sigil. The demon's body suddenly started to twitch and spontaneously combust, its body being devoured by violent bursts of flame coming from the sigils until nothing remained.

{demon slayed! [3 DP] received! Your new total is [3 DP]}

Calvin stared wide eyed before looking back up at Constantine who had the same expression. "Honestly…" he spoke, "I don't think I want to know…"

Later that night

After fighting his first demon, Constantine told Calvin to go to the house's library… there was a book about almost everything there, from demons to angels, even Eldritch beings. Calvin eventually found a book about demons and their classes and power levels, an ancient version of a tier list, you could say. The demon Calvin fought was pretty much the lowest of low, being a imp and not having anything other than claws and heat resistance. After studying for a hour or two, Calvin went to his guest room where he began to question the system "you've been holding out on me, haven't you?"

{correction, host had simply never asked the system. System has never actively withheld information the host has requested.}

And so Calvin asked her everything, told her not to let a single thing slip. He found out some smaller things like eventually unlocking dash and double jump just like the DoomSlayer had. But the main thing he found out is that much like the games, the system had its own version of the glory-kill, which was basically just 'if you kill a demon in a very brutal way, some of your ammo will be replenished, just like in the games, as well as a extra doom point when you kill said demon.'

After a thorough examination, Calvin even found out that the system had a preferences page where he could change its voice, personality, and name… wondering what to put, he simply went for the name of a AI some other buff dude in green armor had. "Fuck it." He said, "I'm renaming you Cortana."
