Chapter 1: The Greatest Wizard in the World — Merlin Ambrosius

Long before the time of Harry Potter, long before the birth of Hogwarts or the Ministry of Magic, there was Merlin Ambrosius—the greatest wizard to ever walk the earth. His name echoed not only across continents but also through time, spoken in hushed tones of reverence by witches and wizards, feared by dark creatures, and admired by all who ever touched magic.

Merlin was more than just a historical figure; he was a myth made real, a living embodiment of magical potential. He lived for more than one hundred and fifty years, witnessing the rise and fall of empires, shaping the early foundations of what would eventually become the British Kingdom. Tales of his deeds inspired generations, and his influence permeated magical institutions centuries later, including Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he is honored with a portrait in the Headmaster's office and a place on the famous Chocolate Frog cards.

His mastery of magic was unparalleled. He commanded the elements with a flick of his fingers, manipulated time and space with ancient runes, and bent the laws of transfiguration and charms in ways no other had dared to imagine. He was said to have crafted spells from raw will, unbound by incantation or wand movement, and could peer into the unseen fabric of reality itself. Many spell theories taught at Hogwarts were derived from his notes, though much of his deeper knowledge remains too advanced—even by modern magical standards.

But Merlin was not content with power alone. His thirst for wisdom was endless. Each day, he delved deeper into magic, transcending the boundaries of humanity. He traveled the known and hidden world, studying ancient texts in forgotten tongues, conversing with centaurs in the Forbidden Forest, and walking alongside dragons in the hidden valleys of Romania. His journeys brought him to remote temples in Tibet, deep groves protected by druids in the Highlands, and underground cities inhabited by magical beings lost to modern records.

Through centuries of research, Merlin cataloged magical creatures, plants, and energies in a compendium whose full scope has never been replicated. He documented the nature of souls, the structure of magical cores, and the rhythms of ley lines that pulsed beneath the very crust of the earth.

Eventually, Merlin came to a terrifying realization: he had transcended the mortal limitations of man. His body aged slowly, his mind stretched beyond comprehension, and his soul—he believed—was no longer wholly human. And yet, at the apex of his might, he sensed it: a final barrier. A threshold not even he could cross. It was the edge of divinity, a line that separated beings of the world from beings beyond it.

He theorized that if he could overcome this limit, he would ascend to a plane of existence beyond mortality itself—to become, in essence, a divine being.

But he was not ready. There was more to understand. Life. Death. The soul. Creation itself.

So he continued his work.

However, his power did not go unnoticed.

The divine entities—cosmic forces that governed the great truths of the universe—began to stir. These were not deities worshipped in temples or feared by Muggles, but primal embodiments of order: Time, Fate, Chaos, Death, Life. Each held dominion over their aspect of existence and ensured the balance of all realms. Though they did not interact directly with mortals, they watched with interest—and concern.

Merlin, in their eyes, was an anomaly. A human who had reached heights they believed unreachable. They feared his potential. They feared that others might follow.

Worse still, Merlin had begun peering beyond the veil of dimensions. He had discovered something forbidden: other realms—entire universes beyond his own. These were not merely magical worlds like those hidden within Earth but entirely separate dimensions, each governed by its own laws.

No divine entity had ever crossed into another dimension, bound by the universal laws they themselves enforced. Yet Merlin, with his deep knowledge of magical theory, space-time, and the essence of soul and matter, formed a radical hypothesis:

If someone could forge a bridge between dimensions—if a single being could cross that chasm—the power they would obtain might surpass even that of the divine.

Driven by this revelation, Merlin experimented tirelessly. He cast spells unknown to modern magic, conjured rituals older than the stars, and invoked the deepest, most ancient magics in pursuit of interdimensional travel. For years, he failed. Time and again, the threads of magic unraveled before he could succeed. Eventually, even Merlin, the eternal seeker, was forced to pause. His body, soul, and magic exhausted, he shelved the dream—for the time being.

But his failure was not in vain. In the process, he expanded his understanding of space, time, magical force, and the potential of the soul. His discoveries laid the groundwork for future innovations in magical theory that would be studied by the likes of Albus Dumbledore and Nicholas Flamel.

Yet, his relentless pursuit had consequences.

Among all the divine entities, it was Death who became most disturbed.

She, who brought balance by guiding souls from life to rest, saw in Merlin a defiance of her natural order. He had lived too long. Grown too powerful. Touched knowledge meant only for higher beings. And worst of all—he had weakened her hold on his soul.

She resolved to act, where others hesitated.

And so, Death began her descent.
