I step into the massive council hall, and as the door shuts behind me, I stare at my father, who is pacing about the empty hall.
He has been in here since the break of dawn…at least that's what the guards said when I demanded to know where he was.
The air in here is thick with silence and worry. He's worried about Mother. I know that. But I also know something else. There's something he isn't saying. Something he isn't addressing.
Although he knows I entered the hall, he doesn't look at me. He just keeps walking back and forth, with his hands clasped tightly behind his back, and his jaw clamped shut. Like if he stops moving, everything he's trying not to face will crush him.
Good.
He should feel it. The crushing weight of the aftermath of this, because I know he has something to do with what happened.
