Renz had always struggled to read social cues and understand the atmosphere. In the art of language, he possessed his own unique interpretation. He spoke his mind about things he dislikedâno passive-aggression or subtle hints. Renz directly pointed out his views.
Moreover, he was incredibly stubborn about his principles. Some actions, though highly beneficial to him, he simply refused to take. Even if everyone else was doing it, he wouldn't cross his own bottom line. To live and work, one must have a moral compass. Even if he couldn't be a hero, he must have his principles.
This made Renz seem unsympathetic in many areas where flexibility was possible. However, there were always exceptions. Even someone who couldn't read the room could understand the presence of one person: Erina. She was angry, for some inexplicable reason, and Renz couldn't grasp why she'd be upset.
Then, Renz's eyes landed on a few pairs of panties hanging on the balcony. Mashiro Shiina didn't do laundry, so naturally, that task fell to Renz. As a rough-and-tumble guy, Renz just tossed clothes into the washing machine and called it a day. After washing, when hanging them to dry, Renz didn't think much of it.
They were simply hanging on the balconyâmen's and women's underwear drying together. At first glance, no problem. But when Erina saw it, it became a huge problem.
"Explain," Erina said, her face cold.
Renz took a deep breath. The Great Tsundere was actually giving him room to explain. She was improving!
"I want a reasonable explanation," Erina demanded, genuinely upset this time. What was going on? She had asked Renz to take care of her cousin, and now it felt like her cousin had successfully usurped her position. She was Renz's wife, after all. Why was Mashiro Shiina serving her tea and water? The most infuriating part was that Mashiro Shiina was actually acting spoiled toward her husband. That tone was clearly reserved for "Erina" herself! What had happened during her absence? And why was Renz also washing Mashiro Shiina's clothes?
"Mashiro's self-care abilities aren't quite like normal people's," Renz said, with a clear conscience. "Have you forgotten about the time we had to help Mashiro take a bath together?"
Not normal? Erina paused, suddenly recalling that day when she and Renz had to help Mashiro bathe. Thinking about it that way, it made perfect sense that Mashiro Shiina couldn't wash her own clothes.
However, Erina also remembered how clingy Mashiro Shiina was whenever they met at family dinners in the future. Could it be that she used to take care of Mashiro, leading Mashiro to become very affectionate toward her? With this thought, Erina approached Mashiro Shiina and noticed that she maintained the same expression throughout, seemingly unconcerned with the outside world, quietly watching TV.
"Mashiro, how do you like living here? Are you used to it?" Erina didn't ask directly but probed.
"Renz's cooking is delicious, and I'm very comfortable living here, but Renz always wakes me up very early every morning. Mashiro is very tired at night; I wish he could wake me up later," Mashiro Shiina said, first offering praise, then complaining slightly. She liked to create at dawn. The early hours of the morning were quiet, allowing her to focus more. However, the side effect was that she struggled to get out of bed during the day. Renz, on the other hand, was an early riser with a regular routine; he would wake her up on time.
Renz dared not let Mashiro Shiina continue. His survival instincts instantly kicked in due to Mashiro Shiina's words. Watching Erina's expression change repeatedly, Renz spoke with lightning speed: "Mashiro draws manga every night; you know that, right? She said she came to Japan to fulfill her manga dream."
"She has classes during the day, so Mashiro saves her manga drawing for the evenings."
"Actually, I tell her to rest early every day so she has good habits and doesn't wear herself out."
"Waking her up during the day is also so Mashiro isn't late for class."
Erina nodded. She could understand. It was normal for young people to like staying up late.
"But why does she call you 'Renz'?" Erina asked, arms crossed. This nickname was exclusively Erina'sâa special term of endearment for Renz.
"Can't I?" Mashiro Shiina looked puzzled. She had heard Erina call Renz that, so she tried to imitate Erina's way of addressing him, because "Renz" just felt more natural and pleasant than "brother-in-law."
"You'd better stick to calling me 'brother-in-law'," Renz naturally saw Erina's subtle displeasure. But women, you know, wouldn't voice such minor complaints directly but would hold onto them. It was better for Renz to defuse the situation now.
"But 'Renz' is easier to say than 'brother-in-law'," Mashiro Shiina said, looking a little wronged.
"Never mind, it's fine if Mashiro calls him that," Erina said, her guard slowly lowering as they talked. It was like an 18-year-old body with a 12-year-old mind; though very intelligent, she was naive due to lack of worldly experience. Erina really couldn't bring herself to be jealous of such a young girl. After all, she and Renz had such a long history together. Why would she be afraid of a little girl?
"What's for dinner? Did you bring any ingredients?" Renz decided to change the subject. It was his first time in such a strange situation.
In the future, Mashiro Shiina would be most clingy to Erina, but now, because Mashiro Shiina was close to him, their conversation gave Renz a headache, as if he were caught in the middle. At family dinners, Renz had even noticed that Mashiro Shiina might have a crush on Erina, accompanied by a sense of sorrow as if his wife had been stolen. That night, Renz was even deprived of the right to sleep in the same bed, left to sleep alone. But now, the tables had turned. Although Renz didn't feel Mashiro Shiina had a crush on him, it was clear Mashiro was clingier to him now, and Erina was experiencing a similar feeling of being excluded.
Realizing the situation was becoming increasingly tense, Renz employed a classic trick every man masters: changing the subject. Once the "aggro" was consolidated at a certain threshold, he would shift the topic to something both parties were interested in and that was about to happen.
Indeed, as soon as Renz said those words, Mashiro Shiina's attention immediately shifted to dinner.
"I want meat!" Mashiro Shiina said softly.
"Meat? I'm very good at meat dishes too!" Erina decided to show off her cooking skills. However, more importantly, she needed to secure her husband. She would ensnare Mashiro with meat dishes! Making Mashiro unable to resist her cooking was key! What kind of situation would it be if Mashiro kept asking her husband to cook every day?!
