Volume 1 Chapter 3: Does It Have to Be Winter?

"Mistress Weiss, is now a good time to enter?" Klein asked after politely knocking on the door to Weiss's room.

"Yes!/No! Wait, no/yes!" Whitley and Weiss called simultaneously.

This caused the butler to raise an eyebrow. "Forgive me, young master and mistress, but I am confused at your direction at this time." Klein replied.

Klein then swore he heard whispered arguing between the two siblings. Raising an eyebrow, he let them debate before they finally called out. "Come in, Klein!" They told him together.

"If this will assist you at all with the matter at hand, I have brought… tea…" Klein said as he opened the door, before being cut off by the sight of Silfrdrengr. "My word. Young Masters, is that a dragon?"

"... If we say 'yes,' will you swear not to tell father or mother…?" Whitley hopefully asked.

"Not a word." Klein replied with a nod.

"Then yes, it is a dragon…" Weiss explained.

The normally light brown eyes of the butler changed red, and his head cocked to the side. "Well to be fair, all we must deal with is your father. The Mistress is so drunk I doubt she knows what time it is." Klein said in a far rougher voice.

Weiss giggled a bit. "That is true, Klein. So, what do you think we should do about him?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

At that, his eyes changed to yellow and became far more chipper as he poured tea for the two. "Oh, this is most delightful! Now all we need to do is tell Miss Winter and…" Klein said before getting cut off.

"Um… do we have to tell Winter right now?" Whitley asked nervously.

At that Klein's eyes then changed back to their usual light brown and steadied himself. "And what reason would that be, Master Whitley?" He asked.

"Well, I was the one who found the Dragonstone. Do you think that Winter will…?" Whitley began to say only to trail off.

"Are you afraid she'll be angry, Whitley?" Weiss asked, a bit surprised.

"Yes…" Whitely sheepishly admitted.

Klein's eyes then turned pink as he looked away bashfully, unable to look the young man in the eye. "To be fair, young master Whitley, it would be unfair to Miss Winter to not tell her… she may be able to assist you two…" He shyly told him.

"Now that we are all agreed, I'll call her." Weiss said as she flipped open her scroll, as she scratched under Silfrdrengr's chin.

Klein's eyes then turned mint green. "Allow me, Miss Weiss!" Klein told her before handing Whitley the tray of tea and leaving the room.

"... Weiss. Why is Klein our butler again?" Whitley asked in confusion.

"Because he knows all of our secrets and, despite his issues, is a very competent head servant." Weiss reminded her brother.

"Do you think Winter will be mad at me?" Whitley asked with a gulp.

"Oh relax, Whitley. I am sure it will be fine. Trust me, she will not be mad." Weiss told him, trying to reassure him.

Meanwhile: Atlas Academy

Winter sighed as she sat down at her desk at the academy. The fact that Klein called her meant something important had happened. However, he was having difficulty in explaining what the issue was.

"Klein, please can you speed this up. I do have a full day of paperwork to attend to." Winter said with a sigh, rubbing one of her temples with her free hand.

"I bloody told yah, Mistress Winter! Thanks to Master Whitley's gift from her birthday, Mistress Weiss has a wee one with her now!" Kelin's voice, now in its grumpy state, told her angrily over the scroll.

"Wait. what do you mean 'wee one?' Weiss got pregnant!?" Winter yelled in fright.

"No, not that, yah Snowy Tart! I mean she-Zzzzzzz…" Klein began to say before starting to snore.

"Klein? Klein? KLEIN!!" Winter yelled into the scroll with a panic, but no answer came. "Son of a bitch…"

Leaping from her desk, she stormed out, slamming her office door behind her. She needed to find the underlying cause of this. And make someone pay.

Two Hours Later: Schnee Manor

"Well, Miss Weiss, I have both good and bad news to present to you." Klein said to Weiss and Whitley in Weiss's room, bowing respectfully in his base state.

Raising their eyebrows, the two siblings looked at each other before Weiss addressed the butler. "Start with the good news please, Klein." She told him.

"Miss Winter is on her way as we speak. At least, I suspect so." Klein explained.

Whitley then looked at him nervously. "And what is the bad news…?" He asked, his concern peeking out in his tone.

"One of my more unfortunate personality changes happened, giving her the false impression that Master Whitley's gift somehow resulted in you getting… pregnant." Klein nervously explained, tugging at his collar over the embarrassing circumstances.

Weiss facepalmed and sighed. "Well, I should have known something like that would happen…" She groaned in frustration.

"How does a rock… get someone pregnant?" Whitley asked confusedly.

'Pregnant…?' Silfrdrengr's voice mentally asked them in their minds.

"What the fuck was that?" Klein asked in shock as his eyes snapped to his red "grumpy" state.

Weiss and Whitley turned to look at Silfrdrengr, causing Klein to do the same. It took Klein's mind a moment to process before he got the implication.

'Weiss… pregnant…' The voice said in their minds.

"No, Master Silfrdrengr. She is not with a child inside her. That is merely her elder sister's misinterpretation of my lackluster explanation." Klein said to the small dragon, reverting to his base state.

The dragon simply titled his head in confusion. Seeing this, Whitley chuckled despite the situation. "Remember, Klein. He is only a baby right now." He reminded their butler.

"Apologies, young master Dragon. I will, in the future, do my best to simplify my explanations to you. Are you hungry or thirsty at this moment?" Klein said respectfully to the young dragon.

At that, Silfrdrengr became excited. 'Thirsty! Thirsty!' His voice said in their minds.

"I shall go get him some water." Klein said before bowing to his master's and leaving swiftly.

However, the trio did not get any time to relax as the door violently flung open, cracking the wall on impact while embedding the door into the wall. The sound of the crash terrified Silfrdrengr as he dove up into Weiss' dress for protection. It was at that moment that Winter stormed in, her eyes burning with rage as she drew her saber. Before her she saw Weiss with an enlarged "belly," due to Silfrdrengr being curled up in fear.

"Who did it, Weiss!? Who got you pregnant and whose testicles do I need to chop off with my sword!?" Winter roared in fury, a pack of Beowolves being summoned to her side from some Glyphs.

"Winter! I am not pregnant! That is not what this is." Weiss yelled with a deep, embarrassed blush.

Silfrdrengr then slipped his head up from the collar of Weiss' dress, looking at Winter fearfully. 'Not pregnant! Not pregnant!' His voice frantically told Winter mentally.

"... Weiss. What is that?" Winter asked, not quite sure what she was looking at.

Weiss sheepishly scratched the back of her head. "If I tell you, do you promise to stay calm…?" She asked their elder sister nervously.

"I promise." Winter said, after a deep breath.

Weiss sighed and took a deep breath. Then, much to the shock of both her siblings, she immediately pointed at Whitley. "It's all Whitley's fault!" She fearfully called out.

"You traitor!" Whitley yelled in deep offense.

Weiss glared at her brother. "Do not give me that, Whitley! You were the one who found the egg and gave it to me as a birthday present!" She snapped back.

"I was doing something nice for you! Would you rather have me not get you anything!?" Whitley yelled back.

It was then that Winter realized what the two were saying, causing her eyes to widen in disbelief. "Wait… egg!? Present!? Whitley's present was actually an egg!?" She asked in shock.

"Yes! A dragon egg!" Weiss shot back.

Silfrdrengr lazily watched the three humans arguing. Yawning, he quickly realized that they had ceased paying attention to him, too preoccupied with each other. Crawling out of Weiss's dress, he looked at the open door and tilted his head in confusion. His eyes then widened in joy as he quickly and quietly scampered out the wide-open door. Up and down the halls he ran about, looking at all the new sights. It was then he stopped when he saw a room with a double doorway. Inside was a lavishly furnished and upholstered room, with a large portrait of a white mustached man that looked vaguely similar to Whitley.

'Weird room. I like.' Silfrdrengr said to himself as he slithered inside.

As he looked around the room, he saw a much larger folding doorway. Opening it up, sending the doors flying to the side in a similar manner to Winter with Weiss's door. As the doors settled down and crumpled onto their sides, he saw rows upon rows of clothes. Most of which were white shirts. Getting bored of this strange sight, he then saw upon a table a most curious thing. A large metal box with mesh bits on the side. And buttons. Lots of buttons.

'OOOOOOH…' Silfrdrengr said as he rushed up the table.

With a clawed hand, he began to press buttons. None of them did anything, other than make clicking sounds, until one made the weird box light up. Then, after pressing a button with a right facing arrow… sound began to come out. The strangest sound that grrrghed and hummed in a strange way. Yet, as he sat there, his head slowly began to bob along as he listened.

Meanwhile: Weiss' Room

Winter sighed as she began to rub her temples. "So, let me see if I have this straight: The stone Whitley found in the mine inspection was actually a dragon egg? And Klein failed to explain it to me, which is unlike him, and only you three know of its existence before me?" She asked, staring daggers at her younger siblings.

"... To be fair, we only just found out today." Weiss pointed out, trying to diffuse their elder sister's anger.

"Well, at least you didn't get pregnant." Winter sighed, taking at least a bit of solace.

"You are… taking this surprisingly well, Winter…" Whitley pointed out.

"How exactly am I supposed to punish you two for this?" Winter deadpan asked.

"... Fair enough. So, what should we do? According to that book, if that egg hatched for Weiss, then that makes her a… what did the book call them again, sister?" Whitley began to say only to turn to Weiss and ask in confusion.

"Dragon Warrior, Whitley." Weiss groaned. "First things first, we need to make sure Mother and Father do not find out about him. I do not care how on the sauce she is, that woman cannot keep her mouth shut."

Winter and Whitley nodded in agreement. "That is true, Weiss. Whatever we do, we cannot let them find out. Whitley, what does the book say about these 'Dragon Warriors' when it comes to being bonded to their dragon?" Winter replied before looking to Whitley for answers.

"What doesn't it say is a better question." Whitley sighed. "It says so much it's hard to tell what is true and what isn't."

"Hand me the book, please. I need to see this for myself." Winter asked, holding her hands out for the book.

"Right." Whitley said before rushing over, grabbing the book and handing it to her. "Here you go."

Opening the book to the Table of Contents, Winter's eyes scanned down until she found the chapter on "Dragon Warriors." Flipping to the page, she scanned the chapter for information before beginning to read off. "'Dragons were said to be the first mortal beings in our world to wield the power of Magic, a gift from the gods that allowed people to wield multiple different mystical powers without the use of Dust, Aura, or Semblances. Through their connection to their Dragons, the Dragon Warriors could cast powerful Magic specific to the element of their Dragons…'" She read aloud as Whitley and Weiss spoke up about what their sister read off to them.

"Magic? Like 'in the movies' kind of magic?" asked Whitley.

"Don't be ridiculous, Whitley. There is no such thing as magic." Weiss snapped back, rolling her eyes at such an idea.

Winter glared at her siblings. "Shush, you two. I am not done." She told them before clearing her throat and continuing to read off. "'The power of Magic amongst mortals was said to be connected to the lifeforce of the Firstborns, the First Dragons of each element born from the cast-off scales of the Dragon King Bahamut. When the Dragons left our world with the gods, it is believed that that is why the power of Magic vanished as well. However, Magic did not completely disappear, for Dust is said to have been formed from the crystalized scales cast off by shedding Dragons…'"

"This still sounds like nonsense." Weiss huffed, crossing her arms.

Winter simply closed the book. "People often used myth and legend to explain things in our world that they didn't know how to explain back then." She reminded her younger sister.

"But what if that is true?" Whitely asked.

"There may be some grain of truth in there somewhere. Behind every myth and legend is some kernel of truth that sparked its creation." Winter noted, seeing his point.

"Well, regardless of what is true, we need to focus on making sure Mother and Father don't find out about… Silfr… dren… gr…" Weiss said, before stopping to look around. "Where did he go?"

Her two siblings looked down at the floor to see that the dragon had disappeared. This caused shock to set in before it slowly turned to panic. "... A dragon is loose in our house…" Whitley said in disbelief as Winter accidentally dropped the book on the floor in shock.

"After him! We cannot let him get found!" Weiss shrieked before rushing out the door, her siblings following close behind.

Meanwhile: Jacques' Spare Room

With a flick of his wrist, Silfrdrengr put on a pair of expensive sunglasses on his face as he slid into a white shirt. Then, with a snap of his fingers, the strange box began to play a tune. As Silfrdrengr slid on his feet out of the large room of clothes to a stop in the middle of the study, he turned to face the inside of the room from the doorway as he began mouthing the lyrics to the song and mentally singing it as he used a feather duster as a makeshift microphone. As he sang, he popped the collar of the shirt as he began using the feather duster as an air guitar.

However, unbeknownst to the Dragon, someone heard the sound of the music echoing down the halls. With a bottle of Six Swans vodka in hand, a clearly drunk woman who was eerily similar in appearance to Weiss and Winter stumbled down the hall to investigate. Though she towered over Weiss, she was somewhat shorter than Winter. She had frazzled, dirty white hair and soon Silfrdrengr locked his eyes with icy blue ones. She wore a simple purple lined shirt and light black pants. The song soon ended, and the air hung quietly. Until the woman looked at the bottle, then back at him. Looked at the bottle, then back at him. Again, and again.

Looking around for something, the woman spotted a nearby large potted plant. Looking at the bottle one last time, she walked over to the plant. "I think I've had enough to drink for… ever…" She said as she held the bottle above the plant and tipped it to pour the vodka out into it.

Once she was done, she wordlessly walked away. Silfrdrengr stood there, in stunned silence, before falling backwards. Once his back hit the ground, he simply lay there, heart pounding. The sudden moment of stress was simply too much for him. However, he was not the only one who felt that at that moment.

Weiss then felt something. An elevated level of stress that clearly was not her own, one that caused her heart to pound in her ears like a barrage of rolling thunder. Concentrating as she ran, she reached out for the feeling, trying to trace it. Soon, she stopped running and closed her eyes on pure instinct. When she did, she saw something that surprised her. A room, one she clearly recognized the decor of. She saw her mother walking over to a potted plant and pouring a bottle of her favorite vodka into the plant before turning around and walking away.

"Weiss? Are you okay?" Winter asked concernedly.

Surprised, Weiss' eyes shot open in realization. "I know where Silfrdrengr is!" She called out suddenly.

"You do?" The two asked surprised.

"Yes! I don't know how I know, but I do! He is in Father's spare room! And Mother just saw him…!" Weiss told them with a grave tone to her voice.

"We're boned." Whitley said nervously.

"Not yet, we aren't! To Father's spare room!" Winter told them, breaking into a run towards the room.

The three then made like the wind and sprinted towards it. It was easy, as the song the young dragon was listening to was playing on loop. However, before they got to the part of the hallway the room was in, they were forced to stop suddenly. If they did not, they would have run over their mother.

"Oh… hello, mother." Weiss said nervously.

"H… hello, Weiss. Whitley. And it's good to see you coming to visit, Winter…" Willow said in a tone that clearly indicated that she was in shock.

"Thank you, Mother. Is everything okay? You look like you've seen a ghost." Winter asked tenderly.

"No… no, I don't think so. I don't think anything is okay right now…" Willow said, her tone still clearly in shock.

"Well, if you ever need to talk about it, we are always there to lend an ear." Winter replied, before giving her younger siblings a side glance to reinforce what she said.

"Thank you. By the way, Winter… I think you were right. I think it is time. I am ready…" Willow told her, letting out a deep sigh.

"Ready for what?" Whitley asked confusedly.

"To start going to Alcoholics Anonymous, dear. I'm so drunk right now that I saw something. Something… quite frankly ridiculous and impossible…" Willow told her son, her tone indicating sheer disbelief.

"Regardless, that is wonderful news, mother. I will make the call in a bit to set you up." Winter said with stunned shock in her voice, yet also pleasant joy as well.

Willow nodded in reply. "Thank you, dear. Now, if you need me… I think I'm going to go lie down and sleep it off…" She told them, looking more tired than she ever had in her life.

"Rest well, mother." The three said as she walked off.

However, as soon as it was clear she was out of earshot, Weiss spoke up. "She saw him. At least something good came out of it…" She said with a sigh.

Sighing, Winter and Whitley nodded in agreement as the three of them headed into the spare room. Before them was the unconscious form of Silfrdrengr. As Weiss had seen him in the vision, he wore a grossly oversized white shirt and a set of expensive sunglasses. The feather dust was some feet away from him, dropped when he fell back.

"Alright. Let's grab him and get out of here. And turn that music box off, Whitley. Why Father likes rock and roll, I will never know." Weiss ordered as she bent down to pick up the young dragon.

Whitley nodded in response. "Yes, older sister. By the way, didn't this song play in the movie 'Troubling Situations…?'" He replied, going to turn it off.

The two sisters gave him an odd look when he said that. "How do you know that?" Winter asked sternly.

Whitley froze and paled a bit, thankful that his back was to his sisters at that moment. "I… may have gotten Father and Mother's permission to watch it one night…" He nervously told them.

"Typical of them. That is not an age-appropriate movie for you, Whitley." Winter sternly replied as she helped Weiss lift the unconscious dragon.

"Can we discuss this after we get Weiss' dragon back to her room before Father sees him?" Whitley asked, a bit exasperated by the interrogation now of all times.

"Of course." Winter answered simply.

With that, the three made a hasty escape. Though their father did not appear, it was clear that they would have to keep an eye on the young dragon. It seemed he had a knack for trouble.
