Liliette,

I must leave before you wake. I will return swiftly, I promise.

I am sending you a small gift ahead of my return. I hope it pleases you. Rest well.

Liliette set the letter down on the nightstand, her fingers lingering on the edge as she perched on the bed. It seemed he was determined to treat her as his wife.

During their last moments together, he had left his seed within her. The gesture felt as much a promise as an expectation—an unspoken message that he intended for her to bear his heirs, affirming her role as his wife beyond question.

His words were slowly starting to sink in.

“When he said I was extraordinary…” she murmured. To have an heir respected by the vassals, the mother’s dignity mattered, too. “He was trying to uphold my dignity because I was once a commoner. It was all for the sake of our child’s future.”
