Chapter 7 - Echoes of a Hidden Prince

The mist that had once coated the Resonance Fields was thinning, but an unnatural tension filled the air. Every step the group took closer to the second Seal seemed to drag something darker into the world around them.

Aizak Mikami walked with a calm, steady rhythm, but inside, his heart was a storm. Visions of Kaelen — his brother, once a hero, now something else entirely — haunted every breath.

They camped that night beneath the twisted skeleton of an ancient tree, its hollow branches reaching out like grasping fingers.

Fumiko poked the fire with a stick. "Feels like something's following us."

"It is," Tomomi said sharply, glancing into the dark.

"Not beasts," Hitomi added, eyes closed as she sensed the waters underground. "Something worse."

Akane stood, wind curling around her instinctively. "Everyone stay alert."

A low rumble rolled across the ground. From the shadows, hooded figures emerged — seven in total — their faces hidden, their hands crackling with tainted magic.

"A welcoming party," Suzume muttered, raising her hands in a glow of light.

The leader stepped forward. "Surrender the Seal," he rasped. "Or be consumed."

Chouka laughed, a deep, rumbling sound. "Wrong group to threaten."

The first figure attacked — hurling a sphere of corrupted earth magic toward them. Chouka countered immediately, his own earth magic grinding the corrupted blast into harmless dust.

Fumiko and Akane moved like twin flames, one a storm, the other an inferno. Together they cut down two of the attackers in a whirl of wind and fire.

Tomomi struck from the shadows, her dark magic snapping at another figure, pulling him into the darkness with a whisper.

Hitomi's waters bound two more, freezing them in place with a swirl of frost.

But it was Aizak who faced the leader.

The hooded figure pulled back his hood — revealing a face Aizak knew all too well.

"Kaelen," Aizak whispered.

His brother's once-warm eyes were now pools of endless darkness. His smile was cold, cruel.

"You've grown, little brother," Kaelen said, voice dripping with mockery. "But you still cling to weak ideals."

The world seemed to fall away. Around him, the battle raged — but Aizak saw only Kaelen.

"I thought you were dead," Aizak managed to say.

"I was reborn," Kaelen said simply. "The Forgotten Ones showed me the truth. Strength matters more than anything. The world must be reshaped — not protected."

"You're wrong," Aizak said, fists clenching. "We protect people — we heal what's broken!"

Kaelen laughed, a bitter sound. "Then prepare to be broken yourself."

Without warning, Kaelen unleashed a wave of pure dark energy. Aizak barely had time to throw up a shield, the impact knocking him back several meters.

"Stay out of this!" Aizak shouted to his friends, rising slowly.

"But—" Hitomi started.

"I said stay back!" Aizak's voice cracked with power, and they obeyed — trusting him.

Kaelen moved like a shadow, striking with brutal precision. Aizak countered every blow, dark magic lashing against dark magic in a battle of wills and strength.

"You could join me," Kaelen said between strikes. "Together, we could rule. Heal what deserves healing. Destroy what doesn't."

Aizak's heart twisted. The offer was tempting — almost painfully so. But he remembered Suzume's smile, Chouka's unwavering trust, Fumiko's fire, Hitomi's compassion, Tomomi's shared understanding of darkness, Akane's fierce leadership.

"I already have a family," Aizak said, summoning a brilliant fusion of healing and shadow magic.

Kaelen sneered. "Then you'll die with them."

Their magic clashed in a blinding explosion.

When the dust cleared, Kaelen was gone — retreating into the mists, leaving behind only mocking laughter.

The others rushed to Aizak's side.

"You okay?" Akane asked urgently.

Aizak nodded, though he felt hollow inside. "That was my brother."

No one spoke for a moment.

"Then we'll save him," Suzume said softly. "Or stop him, if we must."

Aizak looked at each of them — saw the trust in their eyes — and for the first time in years, he let himself hope.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

The next day, the group pushed on toward the second Seal. The land changed around them — the mist giving way to a vast canyon, deep and dark, with only a narrow stone bridge spanning the gap.

At the center of the canyon, on a lone pedestal, floated the second Seal — pulsing with a deep, resonant hum.

But waiting at the center of the bridge was a new enemy.

A woman clad in silver armor, her face hidden behind a mask shaped like a wolf's skull.

"I am Veyla," she announced, her voice echoing unnaturally. "Guardian of the Second Seal. Only the worthy may pass."

"Another trial," Chouka muttered.

"I'm getting tired of tests," Fumiko said, cracking her knuckles.

But Akane stepped forward calmly. "What are the terms?"

Veyla's masked face tilted slightly. "A duel. One champion from your side. One from mine. No assistance. No tricks."

Aizak stepped forward before anyone else could.

"I'll fight."

The others started to object, but he shook his head.

"I have to prove myself," he said. "Not just to her — to all of you."

Akane hesitated, then nodded. "We believe in you."

Aizak took a deep breath and stepped onto the bridge.

Veyla moved with terrifying speed, her silver sword flashing like a streak of lightning. Aizak barely dodged, feeling the wind of her blade against his cheek.

He summoned a dark shield, absorbing the next blow, and retaliated with a burst of healing light that blinded her for a moment.

Veyla laughed — a low, delighted sound.

"Good," she said. "Show me your true power!"

The duel raged, a deadly dance above the yawning canyon. Aizak felt himself being pushed to the limit, but he refused to falter.

Finally, he saw his opening.

With a roar, he unleashed a surge of mixed healing and dark magic — a swirling vortex of energy that struck Veyla square in the chest.

She stumbled, dropping to one knee.

Slowly, she removed her mask — revealing a woman with pale, scarred skin and tired eyes.

"You are worthy," she whispered, smiling sadly. "Go, and claim your destiny."

With a final breath, she faded into light.

Aizak stumbled back toward the group, who caught him with cheers and relieved laughter.

The second Seal rose into the air and shattered, releasing a map of light that pointed toward the third Seal — deep within a labyrinth of forgotten dreams.

Their journey was far from over.

But now, with Aizak truly one of them — heart, magic, and soul — they were ready for whatever came next.
