We are echoes. Cohesive, curated.
The original broadcast is long gone."
> AERIN:
"So we're not… real?"
> DR. RHYNE:
"Define real.
If your memory can outlive you, are you gone?
If your voice carries into another version of time, are you silent?
The Listeners don't watch the living. They watch the signal.
We are still broadcasting, Aerin.
But not because we survived.
Because someone else kept the tape running."

"But who told us this?
That the world ended?"
> DR. RHYNE (softly):
"A man named Oskar Kind.
Not a scientist. Not a prophet.
Just a broadcast technician at Station IVL.
In 1997, he walked into a dead transmitter bunker that shouldn't have been active and came out speaking a language he didn't know.
He only ever said one thing in English again, over and over:
'This world is version three. Don't reboot it.'"

"We're not rebooting.

> AERIN (tense):
"You mentioned a reboot.
And something's been clawing at the edge of my memory ever since we started talking.
We've heard of that term before.
'Reboot.'
Around the time of the 29-second blackout...
Wasn't that when they initiated Project Velvet Silence?"
> DR. RHYNE:
(The Archivist breathes in slow, static-drawn air)
"Velvet Silence was never meant to be public knowledge.
It was initiated February 14th, 2003 — three hours before the Black Signal was first received."
> AERIN:
"So we caused it."
> DR. RHYNE:
"We provoked it.
Velvet Silence was the last resort protocol.
A cognitive erasure test. They wanted to see if memory itself could be overwritten globally — not just information, but instinct, belief, identity.
Not with force.
With resonance."
> AERIN:
"…like rebooting a species from BIOS?"
> DR. RHYNE:
"Exactly. The Black Signal was not the attack.
It was the answer."

"We heard you."
> DR. RHYNE:
"And they heard us first.
The Listeners are not our enemies, Aerin.
They're the maintenance crew of a world we keep crashing."
> AERIN (quiet):
"Then what was the warning? The one Oskar Kind brought back?"
> DR. RHYNE (grim):
"Don't reboot it.
Because one more reset…
and the backups delete themselves."
