Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 – Echoes of the Past

[Survivor's Diary: Ethan Cole – Entry #117]The Shelter is growing—not just in size, but in spirit. Sima's walls are cracking, Aria's reaching out, and even Lira's letting someone in. It feels like we're turning into more than survivors—we're becoming people again. I've started keeping track of it all. If we fall someday, let it be known we were more than statistics. We mattered.

Also… there's something buried beyond the canyon. Something ancient. And we're going to dig it up.

Two days after the excavation of Sub-Level 1 began, a windstorm swept through the outskirts. Dust tore across the land like a sandblaster, forcing everyone to shelter in place. When it passed, it left behind a strange sight: a partially exposed structure embedded in the canyon wall.

It didn't match any known prefab design. No logos. No rusted metal. Just smooth, curved alloy covered in strange geometric markings.

Kenji was the first to spot it while running a perimeter check. He called it in with one breathless transmission:

"You guys better get out here. We've got something… alien."

By noon, Ethan, Jun, and Lira stood at the canyon's edge, eyes fixed on the exposed shape. Sima, ever wary, scanned the surroundings while Rei covered the rear with a scoped rifle.

Lira stepped forward, placing her gloved palm against the surface.

"It's not human," she said. "Not Coalition. Not Sovereign Era. This alloy is pre-tech surge. Ancient."

"Alien?" Jun asked.

She shook her head slowly. "Older than alien rumors. This is…" She trailed off, transfixed.

Ethan crouched near the base. A small seam in the wall caught his eye. With a firm push, a section of the alloy hissed open, revealing a sloped entry tunnel descending into darkness.

"I vote we don't go in," Sima muttered.

"We have to," Ethan said quietly. "If it's old world tech or worse—something that can help us or harm us—we need to know."

With headlamps on and weapons drawn, the team entered the tunnel.

The walls pulsed faintly with internal light as they descended. There were no doors, no cables, no dust. The air was strangely clean.

After twenty meters, they reached a circular chamber filled with tall pillars that hummed faintly. One of them bore something like a control console—a smooth black surface glowing with alien glyphs.

Lira's eyes widened. "It's a memory lattice. These are data spires. If we can decode this…"

A subtle click echoed. Rei spun around, weapon raised.

From the far side of the chamber, a tall figure emerged—metallic and humanoid, but thin as bone and covered in moss and mineral buildup. Its movements were sluggish, almost weary.

"Contact," Rei said softly.

The figure didn't speak. It simply stood there, its head tilted, observing.

Then, the glyphs on the control console blinked.

Jun stepped forward slowly, palms open. "It's not attacking."

"I don't think it can," Lira said. "It's… dying. Starved of power."

Ethan glanced back toward the tunnel. "Can we revive it?"

Lira nodded. "Maybe. But we don't know what it is. Or what it guards."

When the team returned, the Shelter was alive with buzz and tension. News of the ruins spread fast, and the survivors watched Ethan with cautious eyes.

He addressed them that night, standing at the courtyard podium they'd built for announcements.

"This thing might be a risk. But it could also be a way forward. Something that tells us what happened before, and how to survive what's coming."

He paused, scanning the crowd.

"But no one will be forced to help. We've earned our peace. Just know… I won't ignore a chance to secure our future."

Murmurs rippled. But no one protested.

Not even Sima.

Survivor's Diary – Internal Log

[Survivor's Diary: Ethan Cole – Entry #118]

Lira: Obsessed, but focused. She wants to crack the ruins, but I see the excitement in her eyes now. Less about survival, more about curiosity. She's healing.

Jun: Patient. Calm. Always grounding us. He's starting to joke more often. I think he's finally trusting us—and himself.

Sima: She stood beside Aria during the announcement. Didn't flinch. That says a lot. I hope she lets herself rest.

Rei: Always watching my back. We still don't talk about the raid, but I think she knows I'd trade my life for hers. And maybe that's enough, for now.

Kenji: Wants to run a power relay into the ruins. Swears we can make it work. I believe him. He's stubborn that way.

That night, Ethan sat alone with his thoughts in the observation loft. The sky above was clear, the stars sharp against the void. Somewhere below, buried beneath decades of dust and failure, was a mystery waiting to be unlocked.

And as he watched the stars, he whispered to himself:

"We're not just surviving anymore. We're remembering."
