The forest clearing was a battlefield of wind and wings.
Ais stood at its center, her golden hair whipping around her face, her sword Desperate gleaming in the fading light. Her green wind wings extended from her back, pulsing with ethereal power, and her eyes...those cold, calculating golden eyes...were fixed on the swarm descending from the sky.
Millions of insects blotted out the sun. Flies, mosquitoes, beetles, and creatures with no name moved as one, their chitinous bodies forming a living storm that buzzed with hunger. They descended like a plague, their mandibles clicking, their legs reaching for flesh.
Ais raised her hand.
Wind answered.
A torrent of air erupted from her palm, scattering the swarm like leaves in a hurricane. The insects tumbled and spun, their formation shattered. Ais moved through the chaos, her sword carving arcs of green light through the air. Each swing claimed hundreds of lives, their bodies falling to the ground like rain.
The swarm reformed.
A woman emerged from their midst....beautiful, deceptively fragile, her form shimmering with an ethereal glow. Her dark hair cascaded down her back, and her eyes burned with ancient malice. She wore a flowing white dress that seemed to shift and move like living silk, and her smile was serene, almost motherly.
But her eyes held the hunger of a predator.
Querehsha. The Monarch of Plagues. Queen of Insects.
She descended gracefully, her bare feet touching the ground without a sound. The swarm coalesced around her, forming a protective cocoon of chitin and wings.
"A child," Querehsha said, her voice soft and melodic. "A mere child stands before me. however i do like beauties such as you! I will carve your face and own it"
Ais did not answer.
She raised Desperate and lunged.
Querehsha's eyes widened as the blade carved toward her throat. She leaped backward, her body dissolving into a cloud of insects that scattered in every direction. Ais's sword passed through empty air, cutting nothing but mist.
The swarm reformed behind her, and Querehsha's voice echoed from everywhere at once. "You are fast. Faster than I expected." A laugh, light and musical.
She attacked again.
This time, she was faster....much faster. Her sword became a blur of green light, each strike carving arcs of destruction through the air. The swarm around Querehsha dissolved, unable to withstand the force of the wind that accompanied every swing.
Querehsha stumbled back, her composure cracking. "What..."
Ais's blade caught her across the arm, drawing a thin line of black blood. The wound was shallow, but it was enough. Querehsha's eyes widened in disbelief.
"You... you wounded me." Her voice rose, trembling with outrage. "You dared to wound me!"
Ais's expression did not change. She pressed the attack.
The battle became a chase.
Querehsha took to the sky, her insect wings buzzing as she fled. Ais followed, her wind wings carrying her higher, faster. They soared above the forest, the treetops blurring beneath them as they raced across the landscape.
Querehsha threw everything she had at her pursuer.
Swarm after swarm erupted from her body, each one larger and more aggressive than the last. Giant beetles with mandibles like scythes. Wasps with stingers that dripped venom. Spiders with webs that could trap a dragon. Ais cut through them all, her wind tearing through their ranks like a blade through paper.
"Stay back!" Querehsha screamed, her voice cracking with desperation. "I am a Monarch! You cannot..."
Ais's sword carved through the swarm, clearing a path. Querehsha looked back and saw the golden-eyed girl closing the distance, her expression cold and unyielding.
"You are impossible!" Querehsha shrieked. "Your wind....it destroys everything I send at you! Why won't you die?!"
Ais did not respond. She simply flew faster.
The chase continued across the forest, a deadly dance of wings and wind.
Querehsha tried everything. She summoned insects from the ground, the trees, the very air itself. They rose in waves, crashing against Ais like a tide of chitin and hunger. Ais cut through them all, her wind creating a barrier that nothing could penetrate.
"Why?!" Querehsha screamed, her voice raw with frustration. "Why won't you die?!"
Ais's response was a single word: "Avenger."
The word carried weight, power, purpose. It was not just a skill....it was a declaration. Ais had waited her entire life for this moment, and she would not let Querehsha escape.
She lunged, her sword aimed at the Monarch's heart.
Querehsha twisted, the blade grazing her side. A thin line of black blood appeared, and she cried out in pain.
"You..." Querehsha gasped, her eyes wide with fear. "You are not like the others. You are different."
Ais did not answer. She attacked again.
The chase ended at the edge of the forest.
Querehsha stumbled, her insect wings flickering. She had exhausted her reserves, her swarm scattered and broken. Ais landed before her, her wings folding, her sword raised.
Querehsha looked up at the golden-eyed girl, her face twisted with rage and despair.
"You cannot kill me," she spat. "I am a Monarch. I am beyond you."
Ais's sword pierced her chest.
Querehsha gasped, her body arching backward. Black blood spilled from the wound, pooling on the ground beneath her.
"You... hate me," she whispered, her voice trembling. "You hate me, don't you?"
Ais's expression did not change. "No. I do not hate you."
Querehsha's eyes widened. "Then why...."
"You are just in the way."
The words were cold, matter-of-fact. Querehsha stared at Ais, her mouth opening and closing, searching for a response.
Then she laughed....a broken, bitter sound.
"I see. I see now." Her body began to glow, pulsing with a sickly light. "I cannot beat you, little wind spirit. But I can still win."
Her body exploded.
The force of the blast sent Ais flying backward, her wings struggling to stabilize her. Black blood rained down, covering everything....the trees, the ground, the grass. Querehsha's remains had become a plague, a torrent of disease and death that would poison the land for generations....it was the ultimate attack, one that not only killed the land and people, but ensured whoever killed you, also suffers from said plague....Unfortunately for Querehsha...Her opponent was a wind spirit.
Ais landed in the center of the devastation, her body covered in black ichor. She could feel the plague seeping into her skin, trying to claim her.
Then her wings flared.
Green light erupted from her body, the wind swirling around her like a cyclone. The plague was consumed, devoured, burned away by the power of the wind spirit within her....A spirit known for it's connection to forests and healing.
Ais opened her eyes. The black ichor was gone. The plague had been cleansed.
She looked up at the sky, her expression unchanged.
"I told you," she said quietly. "You were just in the way."
She turned and walked away, her wings folding against her back. The forest was silent, the insects gone, the plague defeated....Before it could harm a single leaf
