Episode 8: Ghosts in the Machine

---

The safehouse was silent but tense. Every breath was measured, every movement calculated. Julian's fingers brushed the grip of his rifle as he stared at the city map illuminated on the wall.

"The Ghost Net vault," he repeated, voice low. "That's where everything ends. Or begins."

Eve tapped the screen, zooming in. "Security's insane. They've layered AI sentries, automated turrets, and encrypted locks that change every five minutes."

Reese cracked his knuckles. "Sounds like my kind of playground."

Carter handed out black tactical suits with night vision. "We move in two teams. Eve and I disable the security grid. Julian, Reese—you hit the armory and the mainframe. We rendezvous at point Delta."

Julian nodded. "No mistakes. Max gave his life for this. We make it count."

---

Outside the vault, midnight.

Fog rolled through the empty streets as D7 slipped through shadows like ghosts. The city around them was a cage, illuminated by streetlights and the distant hum of drones overhead.

Julian's comm buzzed. "Move in."

Reese's voice was a low growl. "Let's make them regret ever crossing us."

They scaled the vault's perimeter walls with magnetic climbers, the metal cold beneath their gloves. Reese disabled the external cameras with a well-placed EMP grenade.

Inside, a labyrinth of corridors sprawled ahead. Automated turrets scanned relentlessly, but Eve's team hacked the control panel, blinding the sensors.

Suddenly, alarms blared—a red light pulsed.

"Trap," Eve hissed. "They knew we'd come."

A swarm of Ghost Net operatives poured in.

---

Gunfire erupted.

Bullets ricocheted off steel walls. Reese took down three enemies with precise shots, while Julian ducked behind a console, returning fire.

Carter tossed a flashbang, disorienting the attackers.

"We need that mainframe access now!" Julian shouted into his mic.

Eve's fingers flew across the keypad. "Almost there… Got it!"

The security grid flickered. The automated defenses powered down.

Reese sprinted toward the armory, grabbing explosives and ammo.

"Cover me!" he called.

---

In the vault's depths, an eerie silence.

Suddenly, the walls trembled. Hidden panels slid open. From the shadows emerged a figure—tall, clad in a sleek black exosuit, glowing red eyes piercing the darkness.

Julian froze.

The voice was cold, mechanical: "Project Specter activated. Hostile targets detected. Eliminate."

Lucian's chilling laugh echoed over the comms. "Meet my final guardian, Julian. The perfect soldier."

---

The fight was on.

Specter moved faster than any human—agile, relentless. Reese fired but his bullets bounced off the armor.

Julian's mind raced. This wasn't just a battle for survival—it was a war for the soul of a city, and the truth hidden beneath.
