Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 : Battle under the Eiffel Tower

The Marquis's consul led a group of his men and assassins, opening fire with heavy machine guns.

"Kill—kill them all! Since they dare to be my enemies, kill everyone here!" The Marquis knew that only by wiping out everyone present could he eliminate any evidence that might implicate him, even from the High Table.

Waving his hand, the Marquis quickly joined the killers behind him.

"Ta-ta-ta-ta"—bullets poured freely from the killers' guns.

Seeing this, Alex Ray sprang up from his chair and flipped the table over with one hand.

Dense bullets pierced through the table, leaving thumb-sized holes.

Instead of using his chaos magic to reflect the bullets as he had before, Alex wanted to test the sword skills he'd just acquired.

Using chaos magic in his right hand, he formed a sword and began slashing through the incoming bullets.

Ding ding ding ding!

Then Alex sprinted forward, rushing at the killers. With his superhuman reflexes and masterful swordsmanship, he became a grim reaper, cutting down foes like death incarnate.

Caine was secretly shocked upon hearing the familiar rhythm of the swordplay from across the room. How could Alex's style resemble his own so closely?

Had Alex always used a sword? Previous intel indicated he relied on knives.

Could it be that Alex learned Caine's sword techniques during their last sparring session?

Such talent—truly, heroes arise among the youth. Caine found himself wanting to learn from him.

Nearby, a High Table messenger wasn't so lucky. Despite wearing a bulletproof suit and powerful fire suppression gear, he was cut down in the hail of bullets.

Behind, John Wick also sprang from his chair, grabbed the pistol at his waist with his off hand, loaded it, rolled, and fired at the killers.

Pong!

One killer dropped instantly.

John quickly ducked behind a pillar.

Seeing his first wave of attack thwarted by Alex and John Wick, the Marquis angrily shouted at Caine, "Kane, your turn. Get rid of them fast. Once they're dead, I'll reunite you with your daughter."

Caine slowly rose from his chair and drew his sword. "Actually, the one I want to kill most is you."

Suddenly, Caine jumped up and fired his handgun with his left hand, bullets piercing the heads of the Marquis's men, killing them instantly. He then charged the Marquis with his sword in his right hand.

Caught off guard, the Marquis froze. Just as Caine's blade neared his head, the consul stepped in, raising his right hand to block the strike.

Realizing his ambush had failed, Caine slid back, creating distance from the Marquis and his men.

The Marquis hadn't expected Caine to betray him, especially with his daughter still held hostage.

"Kane, don't you want your daughter anymore? How dare you attack me! Damn it, come down and keep your daughter company," the Marquis snarled, ordering his men to open fire on Caine.

Caine dodged bullets with his suit and sword, smiling. "You don't need to worry about my daughter. You should worry about yourself."

Seeing Caine unharmed, the Marquis grew anxious and snatched an RPG from a subordinate. He fired it at Caine.

Boom.

Caine, dodging bullets at the moment, had no chance to avoid the missile's blast and heard it closing in.

He knew he couldn't escape this time and regretted not seeing his daughter before dying. But Alex and John Wick were here; they would protect her.

"Go to hell, you traitor," the Marquis sneered, watching Caine about to be obliterated.

Bang—hahaha… How could this be? The Marquis's laughter abruptly stopped. The expected explosion never came.

Just as the missile was about to hit Caine, a red light froze it in midair.

Alex had intervened from behind.

"No, you dare touch my people and don't learn your lesson? Guns and cannons are useless against me." Alex spread the fingers of his right hand, posing. The missile reversed course, flying back toward the Marquis as if guided by GPS.

Alex had just finished dealing with the killers around him and was about to confront the Marquis when he saw Caine nearly blown up. He moved quickly to save him.

"Caine, I saved your life again," Alex teased the embarrassed assassin.

"Thank you." Caine stood calmly and brushed off the dust.

Ding

"Congratulations to the host, Kane's favorability has increased to four stars."

"New attribute unlocked: Instinct Lv5."

"Merge immediately?"

"Instant integration."

Suddenly, an explosion erupted. Flames shot into the sky, debris and chunks of flesh scattering everywhere.

"Go handle the other killers," Alex said. "I'll take care of the Marquis."

He strode toward the fire.

The Marquis no longer held his usual composure. His white suit was bloodstained, and he was wracked with pain, collapsing to the ground, gasping.

Jingle bell!

An old-fashioned cellphone rang.

With great difficulty, the Marquis fished the phone from his pocket.

"Mr. Marquis, our businesses have been attacked by unknown forces. We've suffered heavy losses and need support. Family members have been killed without explanation. Marquis, you must take revenge."

A miserable, desperate voice came through.

The Marquis spat a mouthful of blood in rage.

"Alex Ray!" he snarled.

"What? You attacked first. If the tables were turned, would you show mercy?" Alex crouched, looking down at the Marquis.

Alex wasn't softhearted. He knew mercy toward enemies was cruelty to oneself. He disliked trouble but, when it came, he settled it at its root.

Could he live up to Batman's "no kill" code? That was too saintly—and too inconvenient. Every time Batman caught a villain, they got sent to Arkham, healed, upgraded, then came back to fight him again.

It never ended. Maybe Batman was rich and bored.

But Alex had no patience for that cycle. He believed in an eye for an eye.

"If you won't let me live, then everyone dies with me." The Marquis pulled a small black box from somewhere and pressed it.

Alex's sixth sense screamed danger, and his right eyelid twitched.

"What is that? What did you do?" Alex demanded.

With his current power, few could threaten him—unless...

"Guess what? Hahaha! You all will die, and Paris will burn with me!" The Marquis laughed wildly.

A large nuclear missile was launched from an unknown desert, its target: Paris.

"You damn lunatic! Where did you get that missile?" Alex's face darkened.

He hadn't expected the Marquis family to possess nuclear capabilities.

Alex stepped forward and snatched the black box.

Pressed it firmly.

"It's useless. Once launched, the missile can't be stopped, no matter what you do," the Marquis taunted.

Alex drew his gun and fired several shots into the Marquis.

The Marquis fell silent—forever.
