Cyclops, his brother Havok, Iceman, and Colossus walked side by side along the narrow streets of Hell's Kitchen.
This part of the neighborhood had not yet come under federal attack.
Colossus scratched his head, voicing his doubts. "Are we really going along with the federal government's orders and tearing down Hell's Kitchen? Deadpool and I have been here a few times. Under the Lord of Hell's leadership, this place has improved a lot. Most of the residents are good people."
He couldn't understand why the government was so determined to wipe out Hell's Kitchen. The people living here weren't the monsters they were made out to be.
He remembered how friendly everyone had been during his previous visits with Deadpool.
What he didn't realize was that the residents were only that polite because they'd seen bullets bounce off himāthey knew he was made of steel.
"There are plenty of mutants living here too. Could this all be a setup by the feds? Getting us to kill each other?" Icemanāreal name Robert Drakeāchimed in, his voice heavy with suspicion.
His ability to drop temperatures to absolute zero and freeze everything around him made him a force to be reckoned with.
HavokāAlexander Summersāremained silent, his gaze focused intently on Cyclops.
As leader of the X-Men, Cyclops' decisions carried enormous weight.
The team's original mission had been to show the world that mutants could be kind and peaceful. Now they were marching in lockstep with federal orders to destroy Hell's Kitchen. Wouldn't that only reinforce the idea that mutants were dangerous? That ran completely counter to their founding ideals, leaving Havok conflicted.
But Cyclops was the captain. His decisions were final.
Sensing their hesitation, Cyclops snapped at them. "Remember the mission. Professor Xavier has sacrificed a lot for us. We owe him our support. Everything he's done has been for the future of mutantkind."
Cyclops wasn't blind to the federal government's questionable motivesābut if Professor X believed this mission served their cause, they had no choice.
Suddenly, a powerful gust of wind swept over them, and the weather turned volatile in an instant.
Clearly, Storm was engaging her powers.
The four X-Men exchanged glances. They knew a battle had already begun elsewhere.
Cyclops' expression turned urgent. "Quickly! We need to back up Ororo and the others!"
What he didn't say was that he was especially concerned about Jean. She had gone with Storm, and given the volatility of the Phoenix Force within her, if the residents of Hell's Kitchen provoked her, the fallout could be catastrophic.
He had to find herāfast.
They moved swiftly through the dim alleyways, weaving through shadows toward the source of the chaos.
But their path was suddenly blocked.
The four came to a halt, narrowing their eyes at the figure ahead: a man clad in crimson tights, a sword strapped at his waist.
"Who the hell are you? One of the Lord of Hell's henchmen? Get out of the way," Colossus growled as his body began shifting into gleaming steel.
He stepped forward, intending to bulldoze through the obstruction.
"Carefulāthat's Daredevil," Cyclops warned sharply, instantly recognizing the figure.
The others tensed at once, treating the figure with immediate caution.
But DaredevilāMatt Murdockāremained silent. He stood motionless, as if waiting.
Impatient, Havok took the first strike, his chest lighting up as he fired a crackling plasma blast at Daredevil.
The attack surged forward with lethal forceāHavok was clearly aiming for a quick, decisive kill.
Yet Daredevil didn't so much as flinch. In a calm, almost detached voice, he spoke: "BakudÅ #81: Danku."
As the words left his mouth, the plasma collided against a sudden, translucent barrier. Smoke exploded on impact, obscuring the battlefield.
Havok assumed the target was down and gestured for the team to move out. "Let's go! He's doneāmove!"
But Cyclops remained still, eyeing the smoke with suspicion. "Wait!" he ordered, scanning the fog with laser focus.
His tone was grave and commanding. Something wasn't right.
Havok and Colossus froze, confused by his sudden halt.
Then Iceman pointed toward the clearing smoke.
As it dispersed, the silhouette became clear.
Daredevil stood untouched, a glowing square-shaped energy shield still hovering in front of him. It shimmered like glass, perfectly reflecting his figure. Havok's attack had evaporated against the barrier without leaving a mark.
"No way," Colossus muttered, stunned.
He knew just how devastating Havok's energy blasts could be. Not even he, with his steel body, dared take them head-on. Yet Daredevil had absorbed the hit like it was nothing.
Cyclops studied him with a furrowed brow, confusion etched across his face.
Everything S.H.I.E.L.D. had on Daredevil said he was just a highly trained human vigilante. So how had he pulled off something like that?
Was it possible Daredevil was a newly awakened mutant?
The thought intrigued him.
None of the four X-Men dared make a move. Daredevil's strength had caught them completely off guard.
Then Matt spoke, his tone steady and firm. "This is Hell's Kitchen. I won't let you pass and kill innocent people."
He was grateful for the powers Alex Ray had given him. In just two days, he'd thrown himself into relentless training. He'd not only mastered the spell-like techniques Alex implanted in his mind, but had also unlocked a form of Bankai.
If Alex were here, he'd be flooredāMatt had done what even some seasoned Soul Reapers couldn't: achieve Bankai in two days.
Colossus had had enough.
"If you won't let us through, we'll make our own way," he growled, charging forward with his body in full steel form.
Matt let out a soft scoff, shaking his head in faint amusement. "So stubborn."
With that, he slowly reached behind his back and drew a sword from its sheathāa sleek katana with a darkened blade.
The temperature around them dropped abruptlyānot due to Iceman, but from the aura radiating from the blade itself.
Cyclops narrowed his eyes. "That weapon⦠it's not ordinary."
Daredevil raised the sword and pointed it directly at them.
"Bankai," he said softly.
The sky dimmed for a split second, a ripple of energy spreading outward as a swarm of obsidian-black insects materialized in the air behind himāsilent, winged, and eerie.
"Night Demon ," Matt said. "Final Style: Purifying Insects."
The ground beneath them trembled. The swarm surged toward them like a living shadow.
Cyclops shouted, "Fall back! Regroup!"
But it was too late.
The black swarm enveloped them in an instant, cutting them off from the worldāsoundless, airless, suffocating.
Matt exhaled slowly, then stepped back into the shadows, sword lowering to his side.
Hell's Kitchen would not fall tonight.
Not on his watch.
