Chapter 4 - Secret Files and Hidden Needles

The office was colder than Lin Chen imagined — not because of the air conditioning, but because of the atmosphere.

He was assigned a cubicle in the most forgotten corner of the documentation floor. No colleagues came to greet him. Only the buzzing of the fluorescent lights accompanied his arrival.

A cardboard box was slapped onto his desk.

"This is your job for today." Su Wanwan appeared out of nowhere, her voice crisp and professional.

Lin Chen lifted the lid and saw dozens of medical case reports, many stamped CONFIDENTIAL in red.

"Internal files?" he raised an eyebrow.

"You're not here to ask questions. Just help sort and archive them," she said, arms folded. "Start with the folder labeled X3-A07. Don't mess up."

Then she turned and walked away — leaving behind the faint scent of jasmine perfume and a dozen unsaid things.

Lin Chen sighed and sat down. "Alright, system. Any surprise for me today?"

[New passive unlocked: Medical Deduction (Lv.1)]

"Oh ho. Sherlock mode, activate."

As he skimmed through the first file, a case caught his eye — Patient: Yu Zhen, a 26-year-old woman, hospitalized due to acute liver failure. Treated with a series of experimental drugs by South China Medical's R&D division.

She died within 48 hours.

The file stated: "Cause of death: allergic reaction. No further investigation necessary."

But the attached test charts didn't match. Lin Chen's newly unlocked deduction ability whispered at him — the dosage records were manipulated.

He frowned.

Before he could dig deeper, a shadow loomed over him.

A man in a sharp gray suit, mid-40s, expression unreadable.

"You're the new assistant?" the man asked.

"Yes."

"Careful what you read," the man said flatly, tapping the folder. "Some of those things are above your pay grade."

Then he left.

"...Well," Lin Chen muttered, "now I'm definitely going to read them all."

From the upper floors, Su Wanwan watched the surveillance feed of Lin Chen through a tablet, eyes narrowed.

"He found it this quickly?" she said softly.

Behind her, an old man said coldly, "It's better to make him give up sooner. That report must not go wrong."

She remained silent.

Lin Chen had no idea — he just triggered the interest of the company's most dangerous people.
