Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: Yuki Tsukumo’s Hypothesis

Suguru stared, dumbstruck.

"A world without cursed spirits? That's… impossible!"

Yuki smirked mysteriously. "Let me school you."

"Cursed spirits stem from cursed energy. Non-sorcerers can't control their energy leakage, which pools into spirits over time."

"To create a spirit-free world, target non-sorcerers."

"Plan A: Erase all cursed energy. No energy, no new spirits. Think Heavenly Restriction."

"Plan B: Teach everyone to control cursed energy—make them sorcerers. No leakage, no spirits."

Yuki spoke confidently, but Suguru murmured, "There's a third plan: kill all non-sorcerers."

Yuki paused, then chuckled. "That'd work too."

"Not just work—it's the simplest. Like nature: survival of the fittest. But we're not that nuts."

"No way."

A voice interrupted.

Sawa Gojo strolled up, lollipop in mouth. "You two idiots?"

"Killing non-sorcerers sounds easy, but then what? Sorcerers won't birth non-sorcerers? Or vice versa?"

"Take Suguru—non-sorcerer parents, sorcerer kid. It's genetic roulette!"

"Even if you wiped out non-sorcerers, new ones would appear. Cursed spirits would persist."

"Plus, sorcerers are a fraction of humanity. Non-sorcerers drive civilization—food, clothes, planes, trains."

"Kill them, and we're cavemen in the hills?"

Sawa's words stunned them.

He… had a point!

Sawa noticed Suguru's spark visibly dim.

He turned to Yuki. "So, what do you want with me?"

Yuki grinned. "Hold that thought, Gojo-kun. What's your type?"

Sawa paused. "Gentle, empathetic, caring—like a doctor."

Suguru tilted his head. "Shoko's type, huh?"

"Shut it, Suguru! Or I'll leak your con maid catgirl pics!"

Imagining his cosplay shame, Suguru clammed up.

"Oh, was Haibara here?"

"Just left."

Sawa's brow rose. "Got business with him. Later!"

Yuki chased after. "Wait! Gojo-kun, your domain nullifies cursed energy, right? I've got an experiment…"

Suguru watched them go, exhaling softly.

"It won't work…"

...

Hokkaido.

"Earth deity, Grade 2 cursed spirit."

Nanami Kento reviewed his file, drawing a talisman-wrapped dagger.

Haibara Yu, buzzing with excitement, rubbed his hands. "Nanami, a Grade 2's gotta be tough, right?"

Both Grade 3 sorcerers, Haibara's support technique hadn't faced a Grade 2.

Nanami nodded. "Much stronger than Grade 3s. I barely exorcised one by luck."

Haibara gawked. "Just us two? Isn't that rough?"

Nanami brandished his dagger. "I forgot to mention—I'm Grade 2 now."

"Huh?!"

Haibara's jaw dropped. "Since when?"

"Two days ago."

Haibara cheered for Nanami but slumped. "Ugh, when'll I hit Grade 2?"

Nanami mused, "Combat support techniques are rare; promotions are tough. Your Amplification Barrage is like Utahime-senpai's Solo Forbidden Aria."

"Utahime, a third-year, is Grade 2. You'll probably hit it by graduation."

"…Thanks for the pep talk, Nanami."

"Time to work."

"As for the assistant manager's intel, this earth deity's a weaker Grade 2. Let's exorcise it and avoid overtime."

(Nanami's overtime hatred formed post-High after loss and corporate drudgery, but the author added it early for fun.)

Nanami led Haibara into an abandoned temple.

Dense cursed energy prickled their skin.

Nanami glanced around, then yelled, "Run!"

He grabbed Haibara and bolted.

"What's wrong?"

Haibara was clueless.

Sweat beaded Nanami's forehead. "I spotted two Grade 2 spirits!"

"Given cursed spirit nesting habits, if this temple's the deity's lair, it's no Grade 2—it's at least Grade 1!"

"Grade 1? We can't handle that!"

Haibara paled.

They stumbled out, gasping, when the ground quaked.

Rumble—

The temple burst upward, rising from the earth.

Dust cleared, revealing a colossal shadow over Nanami and Haibara.

A massive cursed spirit, the temple merely its crown!

Its size and aura screamed top-tier Grade 1.

Nanami swallowed. "Task department scouted the temple, not the deity's underground body!"

The earth deity roared, dwarfing the "ants" before it.

The ground writhed, sprouting countless stone spikes, their sharp tips inescapable.

"Damn it!"

Despair gripped Nanami and Haibara.

"Technique Reversal: Red!"

A crimson orb blasted like a cannonball.

The deity's body exploded, half pulverized to dust.

"Sawa-senpai!"

Haibara cheered at the figure in the sky.

"One-shot kill—that's a Special Grade?!"

Nanami watched the deity collapse, awed by his "unreliable" senior's reliability.
