Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: Eyes Everywhere

Jace wasn't used to being noticed. She preferred the quiet corners of the library and the steady rhythm of her studies. But lately, it felt like eyes were on her everywhere she went.

It wasn't just Mira's boyfriend, Michael, stealing glances when he thought no one was watching. There was Alex, too—a classmate who somehow managed to cross her path more than usual, always with a casual smile and an easy joke that made her heart skip.

Alex wasn't in her class, but he was in the same grade, sharing a classroom with Michael. He was smart, sharp, and quietly persistent. His gaze lingered on Jace in ways she was only beginning to understand.

During lunch, he found her alone by the lockers. "Hey, Jace," he said, leaning casually against the wall. "You look like you could use a break from all that studying."

Jace blinked, surprised. "I'm fine, thanks."

Alex grinned. "Come on, you're top of the class with Mira. That's gotta be exhausting."

Jace laughed softly. "You have no idea."

Alex's eyes softened. "If you ever want to talk, or just hang out… I'm around."

Jace looked away, suddenly aware of how her world was shifting. Between Mira's endless stories about Michael and the quiet pull of Alex's attention, she felt herself caught in a web she wasn't sure how to escape.

At the same time, her friendship with Mira remained a steady force. They studied together, pushed each other to be their best, and shared secrets that went beyond grades and exams.

But even with that closeness, Jace knew the game was changing. And with Michael so close, the stakes were higher than ever.

Jace wasn't sure when she first noticed it—the way Michael's eyes didn't quite light up when Mira walked into the room, or how his laughter seemed more polite than genuine whenever Mira made one of her endless jokes about their future together.

It wasn't something he said aloud. Nothing was ever that clear. But Jace felt it, like a cold shadow lurking beneath Mira's bright smile.

One afternoon during break, Jace found a quiet spot under the old oak tree by the courtyard, flipping through a book to escape the noise inside. Michael passed nearby, chatting with some friends, but when their eyes met, it was different—there was no warmth, no spark. Just a brief flicker of recognition before he looked away.

They didn't speak. Nothing was exchanged.

But for Jace, that small moment whispered a truth she wasn't ready to admit: Michael didn't love Mira the way Mira loved him.

What Alex did notice was something else.

After seeing Jace glance at Michael a few times, lingering a little longer than casual, Alex started to wonder. He kept his thoughts to himself, quietly hoping he was overthinking it. The last thing he wanted was to be right about what his heart feared—because Alex cared for Jace more than he could say.

One day, he found her alone by the lockers. "Hey, Jace," he said, leaning casually against the wall. "You look like you could use a break from all that studying."

Jace blinked, surprised. "I'm fine, thanks."

Alex grinned, but there was something softer in his eyes. "You've been looking at Michael a lot lately. Are you... okay?"

Jace's heart skipped. She looked away, unsure how to answer.

Alex shrugged, trying to keep it light. "If you ever want to talk, or just hang out… I'm around."

Mira, on the other hand, was blissfully unaware of the tangled feelings swirling just beneath the surface. She trusted both Michael and Jace completely and was counting down the days to the big game, excited to share the moment with both of them.

Jace's chest tightened with every secret she held—caught between loyalty, love, and the unraveling truth.

And with so many eyes watching, she wondered how much longer she could keep pretending everything was fine.

"Jace! You have to come!" Mira said one morning, practically bouncing on her toes. "Michael and I are going to be the perfect team. You're coming with us, right? It'll be so much fun!"

Jace forced a smile. "Of course."

Mira's excitement was contagious, but Jace's heart ached beneath the surface. She wanted to believe in Mira's happiness as much as she did, but every glance at Michael reminded her of the distance she'd seen.

Alex watched it all quietly, hoping his fears were wrong but preparing himself for whatever came next.

And in the quiet spaces between friendship, love, and secrets, Jace wondered how much longer she could keep holding it all together.

That afternoon, Mira found Jace in their usual corner of the library—their quiet refuge from the chaos of school.

Sliding into the seat across from her, Mira's eyes sparkled. "Jace, I don't know what I'd do without you," she said, smiling warmly. "Michael's been amazing lately. I'm so happy."

Jace closed her notebook, giving Mira her full attention.

"He's such a great boyfriend," Mira continued, her voice light but full of meaning. "You know how much I care about him. Sometimes I can't believe he's mine."

Jace nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "He sounds perfect for you."

Mira reached across the table, squeezing Jace's hand. "I'm serious, Jace. You've been there for me through everything. I want you to know I trust you. More than anyone."

Jace looked down at their hands, the weight of unspoken feelings pressing heavy on her chest.

"I'm really happy for you, Mira," Jace said quietly, forcing a smile.

Mira's grin was bright and genuine. "Thanks, Jace. That means everything."

As Mira gathered her things and left, Jace sat back, the silence around her suddenly loud. She wanted to share her truth, but for now, she kept it buried deep — caught between love, loyalty, and the fear of breaking the fragile balance.
