Chapter 340 - Chapter 340: Research

The dimensional artifacts Marcus had collected from the battlefield were now fully processed, their various energies transformed into empowerment cores that floated in organized rows around his workspace. While the power boost had been significant, it hadn't provided the quantum leap in capability he'd been hoping for.

His primary focus remained on the incomplete transformation of Ember. Until that Warframe reached its full potential and he could properly master the cosmic fire energies contained within it, attempting any major operations would be premature. But Marcus was far from idle while waiting for the evolution to complete.

The two most critical components of his long-term development plan demanded his constant attention: the Riven Crystal research and the Final Empowerment project. These weren't just power enhancements—they were the foundation for potentially unlimited growth.

"The complexity of these systems is absolutely ridiculous," Marcus muttered, leaning back in his chair as he studied the floating holographic displays that showed his current research progress. "I've been working on the Riven Crystal for months and I'm still not even close to creating a stable, controllable version."

The Riven Crystal was particularly frustrating because of its chaotic nature. Unlike other enhancement materials that followed predictable patterns, Riven Crystals were inherently unpredictable. Each one was unique, and their effects on Warframes and weapons could range from spectacular improvements to catastrophic failures. The potential for unlimited enhancement was there, but so was the risk of complete destruction.

"But at least I'm making progress," Marcus continued, a note of satisfaction creeping into his voice. "I've finally identified the underlying principles."

He gestured, and several ethereal symbols materialized in the air before him. These weren't written in any earthly language—they were void-script, words of power that existed in the spaces between dimensions. Each symbol pulsed with its own unique energy signature, and together they formed the conceptual framework that governed both Riven Crystals and Final Empowerments.

"Just a few more void-words and I can start attempting stable combinations," Marcus observed, studying the floating symbols intently. "The uncertainty principle still applies—I won't know what effect a specific crystal will have until it's actually created—but at least I'll be able to control the basic stability parameters."

The research was painstaking work, requiring him to delve deeper into the fundamental nature of void energy than he'd ever attempted before. Each new symbol he deciphered brought him closer to understanding how reality itself could be restructured at the quantum level. His own power was growing incrementally with each breakthrough, even if the gains weren't immediately obvious.

Meanwhile, three thousand miles away in Stark Tower's research laboratory, Tony Stark was experiencing his own obsession with technological advancement. For more than ten days straight, he'd barely left his workshop, surviving on meals delivered by Happy and working sessions that stretched deep into the night.

"Jarvis, give me your assessment of the Mark 54 design," Tony said, gesturing at the holographic armor schematic rotating in front of him.

"The aesthetic improvements are flawless as always, Mr. Stark," Jarvis replied in his perfectly modulated voice. "The color scheme particularly complements your existing wardrobe choices."

Tony was quiet for a long moment, then shook his head in frustration and dismissed the projection with a wave of his hand.

"No, this is just another incremental upgrade," he said with obvious disappointment. "Better materials, more efficient power distribution, improved weapon systems—but it's fundamentally the same design philosophy as every other suit I've built. There's no revolutionary breakthrough here."

He pressed his hand against the arc reactor in his chest, feeling the familiar warmth of the device that had kept him alive for years. Immediately, nanomachines began flowing from the reactor, covering his body in the sleek lines of his most advanced suit.

"This nanotechnology suit is effective," Tony continued his self-analysis, "but it has severe limitations when facing cosmic-level threats. Against someone like Malekith or the Cursed Warriors, I'd be fighting a purely defensive battle."

The problem was storage capacity. The nanosuit could only carry a limited arsenal of weapons, unlike his larger armor suits that could mount heavy artillery systems. In a prolonged engagement against enemies with supernatural durability, he'd eventually run out of ammunition.

"Marcus's equipment, on the other hand..." Tony trailed off, remembering the casual ease with which Marcus had deployed seemingly impossible technology during the London crisis. "I still have no idea how he does half the things I've seen him do."

The memory of watching Marcus tear through dimensional demons with technology that defied known physics was both inspiring and deeply frustrating. Tony prided himself on being able to reverse-engineer almost any technology he encountered, but Marcus's abilities seemed to operate on principles that simply didn't exist in conventional science.

"What happens when Marcus isn't available?" Tony asked himself. "Do we just hope those mystical sorcerers can handle cosmic threats? Because that bald woman seemed pretty overwhelmed during the dimensional battle."

Just as his mood was beginning to sink into genuine pessimism, Tony's gaze fell on two metallic spheres sitting on his workbench—the Tesla Nervos and Bounce Pad devices that Marcus had given him as "toys" to reverse-engineer.

"That's it!" Tony exclaimed, his excitement immediately reigniting. "I've been approaching this completely wrong!"

Instead of trying to build bigger and better versions of existing technology, he should be focusing on understanding the fundamental principles behind Marcus's reality-manipulating devices. Those two spheres represented an entirely new category of science that could revolutionize everything.

Tony carefully lifted the Bounce Pad device and carried it to his most sophisticated analysis station. Unlike his usual projects, this required extreme delicacy—one wrong move and he might destroy the only examples of this technology he possessed.

"Jarvis, begin recording a complete disassembly analysis of the repulsion device," Tony commanded as multiple high-resolution cameras focused on his work area.

"Recording initiated, Mr. Stark. Shall I also prepare the quantum-level scanning arrays?"

"Everything we've got. I want to understand this thing down to the atomic level."

The Bounce Pad device wasn't actually a solid sphere as it appeared. Under close examination, Tony could see that it was constructed more like a metallic orange—composed of individual segments that fit together with microscopic precision. Each "segment" seemed to contain its own miniaturized systems, and the overall design was far more sophisticated than anything Tony had seen in Chitauri technology.

The disassembly process took several hours of painstaking work, but eventually Tony had the device completely broken down into its component parts. What he discovered made him laugh with pure delight.

"Jarvis, are you analyzing these internal structures?" Tony asked, wiping sweat from his forehead as he studied the device's interior mechanisms.

"Analysis complete, Mr. Stark. The engineering principles are unlike anything in our current database. The energy distribution system appears to operate on controlled gravitational manipulation rather than conventional electromagnetic fields."

"Exactly!" Tony said, grinning broadly. "This isn't just advanced technology—it's a completely different approach to physics. No wonder I couldn't figure out how Marcus does what he does."

With growing confidence, Tony moved on to the Tesla Nervos device. His experience with the first sphere made the second disassembly much faster, and soon he had both devices completely analyzed and understood.

"The autonomous movement capabilities are the key," Tony realized as he studied the Tesla sphere's internal gyroscopic systems. "This thing can navigate three-dimensional space independently while maintaining continuous electromagnetic contact with its target. It's like having a smart missile that never runs out of ammunition."

The implications for his armor designs were staggering. Instead of mounting static weapons systems, he could deploy autonomous devices that would continue fighting even if his main suit was damaged or disabled. The tactical applications were virtually limitless.

"But first," Tony said, suiting up in his flight-capable armor, "I need to have a very serious conversation with Marcus about what else he's been hiding from me."

As he launched himself from Stark Tower toward Marcus's current location, Tony's mind was already racing with questions. If Marcus could create devices this sophisticated as casual demonstrations, what kind of technology was he capable of when he was actually trying? And more importantly, would he be willing to share enough knowledge to help Earth defend itself against the cosmic threats that seemed to be appearing with increasing frequency?

"That guy definitely has more tricks up his sleeve," Tony muttered as he flew through the night sky. "And this time, I'm not taking 'it's complicated' for an answer."
