Chapter 42 - Between Duty and Desire

ANTHONY'S POV

I looked at her—and I couldn't look away.

Alicia sat there, just waking, her hair spilling around her shoulders like strands of moonlight, wild and soft, framing her face like she'd stepped out of a dream. Those blue eyes—too bright, too full of light I didn't know how to hold.

This woman. This beautiful, maddening woman who'd made me dance with her, who'd let me touch what should have been forbidden. She made me want, made me fear myself.

"I do believe everyone falls in love," she said, her voice so quiet, so certain, it cut deeper than a shout.

I closed my eyes, swallowing hard. Damn. Why was she so stubborn? Why did she have to touch that place—the one we'd both agreed to not touch?

"We can't do this," I said, jaw clenched so tight it hurt. The words tasted like ash on my tongue. I feared what saying them would do to me. "It was just one night we spent together. Don't think too much of it."
