~~~ [START]
"Vlad!" Edward shouted from the back. "I need your help."
Vlad frowned as he neared him.
"Help?" he asked, half glancing back at his bike, wishing he had turned on the engine before approaching Edward. "Sure, man, what's up?…"
"Bella saw me when I stopped the car from crushing her," Edward continued, walking closer. "I thought she wouldn't notice, but… it… it…"
"Bro…" Vlad raised his arms. "Calm down," he said, brows raised in confusion. "Okay, what are you talking about?"
"She saw me when I pushed the car!" he shouted, holding his head with both palms before brushing his hair back. "Please," he turned to him, eyes locking with his directly, "tell her she's just imagining it." He held out his hands, gripping Vlad by the shoulders. "She'll believe you. Just… tell her I was standing right behind her the whole time."
"I'm sorry, man," Vlad said, shaking his head as he slowly removed Edward's hands from his shoulders. "I can't get involved in this."
"Why?" Edward asked, frowning, eyes fixed on Vlad as he began to retreat.
"I don't like lying, man," Vlad said, and Edward frowned at his words.
"So you're going to tell her?" he shouted, nearly losing control. "Do you know what that will do to us?"
"Keeping quiet isn't lying," Vlad interrupted, glancing back at Edward as he started walking away. "Look, man, I won't tell her anything. All I'm saying is, if she ever comes suspecting me of something… I don't want to lie."
He mounted his bike and started the engine, revving it once.
"Do as much lying as you want," he said, putting on his helmet. "But I'm out of it."
Then he drove off, leaving Edward to release a sigh in his retreat.
Sighs, he had long since forgotten.
Ones that reminded him of what he was, what he didn't have.
A soul.
---
{HOURS LATER}
The sky remained in contradiction, as forge and sun retained their constant clash.
The sound of a bike broke the silence, cutting through the trees like a knife.
But then, the bike halted, waiting still on the road for a second too long.
Vlad's head turned around, searching for the direction of the aroma.
And as if bad luck was his only witness, that same smell was leading straight to his house.
Vlad sighed, shaking his head, then drove off, following what he had promised to avoid.
---
THUD!
"You know, I swear your brother threatened to kill me if we ever met," Vlad said, opening his door. His eyes turned to the woman who was uninvitedly seated on his sofa.
He shut the door behind him, unbothered by her silence.
He threw his bag to the floor, walked to the fridge, grabbed an unopened box of milk, twisted the cap, and chugged it with the thirst of a man dying in a desert.
"You should use a cup," the woman said, the first words she had spoken since they met.
"Box?" Vlad whispered with a crinkle. 'In my own house,' he thought, giggling softly.
He sighed, returned the box to the fridge, closed it, then moved to the sofa and threw himself down opposite her.
"Okay," he said, smiling. "What can I do for you?"
The girl remained silent for a second too long, so long that the faint chirps of afternoon birds sang freely, their songs seeping through the windows.
"Go on a date with…"
"I have a girlfriend," Vlad cut in, stopping her sentence like a shield meeting a knife. "I'm sorry, I tried telling your brother, but he kept on…"
"My cousin," she whispered. She hadn't meant to interrupt, but Vlad's sharp hearing caught it, causing him to slip slightly.
"I'm sorry," Vlad said again. "But I have a girlfriend." Then he paused, clicking his tongue slightly. "Well, not an 'actual 'actual' girlfriend," he admitted, "but you know what I mean."
Yet the girl's gaze didn't shift. The sparkle in her eyes didn't flicker.
"How strong is it?" Vlad asked, holding his palm to his face and leaning sideways, overwhelmed by stress. "The imprint thing?"
"I dream about you," the woman replied, causing his heart to skip a beat.
He nodded, his eyes moving as they studied her features.
She honestly wasn't bad by his standards, but even so, he couldn't stop his eyes from unconsciously shifting to her chest.
"Okay!" Vlad stood up and grabbed the bag on the floor. "I'm expecting someone, so…" he almost rethought his decision, but his lips had already parted and his voice had already risen halfway up his neck. "Tomorrow?"
A flicker of a smile touched her lips as she nodded and stood.
She couldn't gather the courage to lift her head and look at him.
So she left.
Opening the door and allowing it to shut behind her as she retreated.
THUD!
Vlad cursed himself, shaking his head.
"She's too tall," he whispered, inwardly crying at what he had done.
Yet before even a second could pass.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
The ghoul had arrived, perhaps an hour too early.
